Well, the lack of a clique 'mentality' only suggests that the clique(s) haven't developed conscsiously, with malicious insider/outsider intent. Doesn't mean that they don't exist.

It could also just be that those questioning the existence of cliques are just not very observant (or not around that much). ;)

I am around, I just don't post that much anymore. :P

I guess the term 'clique' seems quite pejorative. If these groups aren't malicious then maybe they are just friendship groups, which are the natural result of any social interaction. That doesn't justify anything, but it might go someway to explaining things.

I think there are groups of people who are closer friends than others, and at some times I have noticed that more than at others. For example at the moment, I haven't really thought they were that pronounced (which is why I was surprised the issue had come up now specifically).

Yeah, that. Pleased

Or it could mean that you're in one, and in severe denial... ;)

Yawwwwwwwwwn! So, answer me this, yes or no, do I tend to ignore people outside of this group?

Well I asked you a question about five pages back on this thread and you didn't answer me. :$

Made you look!

Actually I think Elliot summed up what's going on very nicely in another post.

My apologies - the answer is: yes, but not if it's rusty.

Google's giving me the definition of 'clique' as "a small, exclusive group of people" (and other terms to that effect). That seems a relatively accurate analysis of a friendship group, I think? But I suppose that the term 'clique' does sound a little derogatory (if that's what 'pejorative' means).

No one said anything about ignoring outsiders as such.

But surely that's the nature of a clique?? You do just mean friendship group then? I can live with that - it's what happens over time wherever you go!

Pejorative means the word contains negativity within itself (I looked it up :$), and clique seems to have this negativity whereas 'friendship group' doesn't so much.

The OED says that clique is a term of 'reproach or contempt' so it does have more negative connotations than other terms. That's what I was pointing out as the difference.

I think it's because it implies the exclusion of all outsiders - which is most probably the bit that irks everyone.

I wouldn't have said it's a necessary 'feature'. Being a little less accepting of outsiders certainly, and yes a certain element of exclusivity and closed-ness. But that's not to say that a clique would completely ignore anyone outside of the group.

Hmm. Maybe. I wouldn't have put some of what goes on as just a 'friendship group' though. Not that what does happen is necessarily malicious or sinister in intent in some way, but that makes it sound rather more innocuous than it is, at least to outsiders.

I'd like to see a list of who is in this clique. That would be fun, and messy.

I would be pissed if I wasn't in it, 20000+ posts has to have got me somewhere.

This feels a little bit like we are now making fun of the people who feel they are outside the clique, which I'm sure is not the case. Certainly not on my part, rather I a trying to get my head round the whole notion.

From the Cambridge dictionary:

clique noun
/kliːk//klɪk/ n (C + singular or plural verb) disapproving a small group of people who spend their time together and do not welcome other people into that group

Well I know I'm not in it.

That's only confirming what I said in the post you quoted! It doesn't say anything about ignoring outsiders. Just not letting them in - i.e. that exclusivity.

Eh? So if someone can freely chat with any members of the group how do they know whether they're outside it or not? This. Is. All. Nonsense.

Well I know I'm not in it.

Lol! So this is that denial you were on about?!

Quote: Aaron @ November 14 2009, 4:29 PM GMT

Or if you're not in the clique. ;)

I'm so fed up of that fricking word.
