I'm quite impressed you have a list for 30s/40s as well. :)

Not complete yet. I've started from there in building up some guides though. It will fill out in the coming months!

Brilliant, but better than RD?? Surely not!

By umpteen country miles.

I'm sure we've had a similar thread.

Cool, uncovered any gems yet?

60s - Hancock/Hancock's Half Hour
70s - Porridge
80s - Blackadder
90s - Father Ted
00s - Peep Show = The Office

(Fawlty Towers is as good as any of these, but I don't tend to link it to the 1970s particularly, however odd this may be.)

50s - Hancock's Half Hour

60s - Steptoe and Son

70s - Dad's Army

80s - Blackadder

90s - Red Dwarf

00s - The Office

by the way James I am sorry to report that you have been replaced by the high flying Jim Field as the object of BCGer's affectionate mocking.

50s Hancock's Half Hour
60s Steptoe and Son
70s Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin
80s Butterflies
90s Royle Family
00s Peep Show

80s Butterflies

Really? I've never even seen this, is it that good?

Butterflies was crap if you were an insensitive mysoginistic oik.

If, on the other hand, you were a woman or a sensitive man it was a wonderful cocktail of comedy and tragedy.

It was also a shocking first for BBC comedy in that its very basis was a respectable wife's attraction to infidelity.

Good old Carla. There'll never be another like her. Cool

50s Hancock's Half Hour
60s The Likely Lads
70s Rising Damp
80s Yes Minister
90s Father Ted
00s The Office

60s - Steptoe and Son
70s - Dad's Army
80s - Only Fools and Horses
90s - One Foot in the Grave
00s - Not decided yet (that's not a sitcom by the way).

True. She is a genius. It does get dismissed as crap but I think if anyone was honest about it they'd have to admit it was brilliant and innovative even if it wasn't their cup of tea.

Butterflies could have been called Woman On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown. This was indeed a very good premise for a sitcom. Unfortunately Carla Lane didn't really have any ideas beyond this premise, hence each episode was ultimately exactly the same.

Oh yes - I forgot One Foot in the Grave.
