As far as I know it's not caused or made worse by stress. It's a condition that comes and goes and probably effects most women of child-bearing age at some point. I've had it, my sister's had it, me neices, etc. It can make you feel sluggish, but it's really nothing to worry about. Iron tablets can cause constipation so it's better to ultmiately get the iron through your diet. Are you a veggie? Because that's obviously a major cause. If you are you could maybe try eating more green leafy veg, eggs, etc and other non-meat foods that contain more iron (although I believe red meat is the best source) combined with a low dose iron tablet?

I'm not a veggie, but it may well be indirectly caused by stress, because that means I don't eat properly. I went to the doctor today, and he said I'm very anaemic, before ordering a lot more blood tests. Ferrous (sp?) sulphate makes me feel ill, so he prescribed me a different form of iron tablets. Oh well. I guess it'll all work out.

Without (in any way) trying to take the conversation into this general direction, the commonest cause of anaemia in a otherwise healthy young women like yourself, Robyn, is menstrual-related. And, if so, usually quite easily remedied. Don't fret too much and take care. Hug

*nod* He asked me about that a lot, and I think he as surprised that I answered without embarrassment...or at least without showing it...

Any "serious" problems with your blood would have been spotted on the initial blood test. When they find a previously unknown anaemia, they have a proper look under the microscope at the blood cells, so any "horribles" tend to be picked up. Iron tablets can be great, but stomach ache is a common side-effect. Very much doubt it's too much to do with your diet though.

I had such bad stomach aches from the other iron tablets, and all I know now is that I need a lot more blood tests. All my A-level biology came back to me once he started explaining why testing for calcium and things was important and I just nodded.

:D

I don't think I implied that. :D I meant, once it's treated or controlled, you'll get more energy.

I haven't done the scientific research myself, but I heard this was a myth. The greener the leaf, does not necessarily imply it's better for you. But it doesn't hurt eating lots of greens anyway.

Ellie has been in boring training all morning and got more this afternoon.

I am not anaemic but I have had a couple of incidents caused by shockingly low iron levels. Mainly from working myself to death and not eating much.

Iron tablets make you poop. That's what I learned from the whole thing!

My PE teacher was convinced I was anaemic when I was about 12, made my mum take me to the doctor and everything! That's how brilliant I was at pretending to be ill every week to get out of games. (Being pale and very skinny helped.)

Of course when it came back negative I had to do PE. :(

And turn your poop black. :)

"What do you mean you forgot you kit, again?!" was what P.E sounded like to me.

And make you say the word poop?

If you forgot your kit at school you had to do it with the bits found in lost property... they were NOT nice.
