Got caught in the rain, wearing my very expensive leather brogues. They're completely ruined; I've had to throw them away.

I'm surprised that you could ruin good leather with water.
Just let them dry out slowly & then brush & repolish.

To be honest, I had no idea there was such a thing as good and bad leather.

Well you think that saddles and riding tack are made of leather and are used in all weathers and last if properly cared for. I've noticed that cheaper leather jackets go a bit stiff and crack after getting very wet, for instance.

Well you see it starts with good & bad cows.
The good ones stand around or lie around placidly in the rain making sure their future leather is waterproof & the bad ones run around chasing townies & tourists & making their skin thin and likely to leak.
Well, cheers again to Bill and Dolly. I've certainly learnt something new.
