Let's All Mock The Hippy Page 2

Everyone in the thread so far.

It seems like it's quite easy to get people wound up by Daily Mail nonsense, but not apparently Guardian nonsense.

It's a sign of the times Kevin, with 3 million unemployed and jobs and money as scarce as rocking horse shit, the idea of being self supportive isn't such an outlandish proposal.

He's opted out of society in a peaceful, non-piss your trousers drunk beggar outside Tottenham Court Road tube station type of way.

My only criticism would be that he doesn't contribute financially to society - either as a tax payer or as a consumer.

Well he eats our garbage and feeds it to others. Not to mention living in it and wearing it.

So I guess he saves a few tonnes of waste each year which must contribute something in cost saving.

Until he can make his own CAT scanner, wi-fi network or aircraft carrier out of twigs and crisp packets, he will end up being a costly drain on society.

It'd be interested to see how much anyof us work out as a drain/gain to society.

Supposing this guy eats 3 tonnes of garbage a year and then persuades another 1000 people to eat 3 tonnes each. That's 3003 tonnes of garbage.

At about £40 a tonne. He has saved us £12,120 just by eating our crap and encouraging others to do the same.

Or the thousand other people could all work, buy stuff and pay tax, thus creating jobs for thousands of other people.

Assuming the thousand people are on an average wage of £20,000 each - that's £20000000. Slightly more then a piddling 12k.

And if those people stopped handling cash? There's near enough a million quid in lost tax revenue. Fine if they don't want to use the NHS, roads, police, etc.

Snap.

Whatever happened to 'Swampy'? I quite warmed to the lad (as did Ian Hislop, according the DVD commentary) years ago when he appeared on Have I Got News For You. He was my kind of lefty. He knew what he was against, but had no pretensions as to knowing what to do instead. :)

Aww, Swampy! He was mentioned in the Pirate episode, right?

He died of heart disease. Refused to have a bypass.

Wikipedia:

"In 2006, Swampy was living with his partner and their three children in a yurt"

Now there's a family sitcom I'd like to see.

Are we wandering into capitalist fascism...

You will work, you will spend, you will consume.

In this latter day 1984, would Winston Smith be forced to go on ebay? Would O'Brien stick his head in the rat cage till he completed his Christmas Argos order?

You are absolutely correct - the British government forces each citizen to have a bank account, compulsory payments to the state owned television channel and puts unfair, unproportional taxes on virtually everything required to survive.

And if you wish to opt out of these constraints - being paid in cash, not watching the BBC, etc. - Government vans and inspectors will come to your home to investigate you.

Almost completely right. They make life near impossible if you don't have a bank account, but do little to help those who can't get one.

Personally a few people not contributing and not taking. Well it can't do that much harm. I mean we are running out of oil aren't we?

You are toying with me... or getting close to living off dustbins in a yurt your self.

Let's not forget car insurance as well - it doesn't matter how careful a driver you are, if you don't spend out on it, the Government will come and get you.

Are you suggesting that car insurance should be optional and that careful drivers never have crashes?
