Nick Griffin on Question Time Page 30

Britain's innability to acknowledge the strengths AND the faults of Empire, has reduced it to some eternal naughty school boy. The Americans who talk about slavery and the Germans who freely talk about Nazisim are far more confident than us. Because they freely accept that you can't free slaves without having them in the firstplace. No one can make the English ashamed except themselves.

That's not PC it's common sense.

With respect, that is utter rubbish - the British were the first to outlaw Slavery and publicly regret its role in it. The only reason we don't go blagging on about it is because we have modesty and restraint while the Yanks shove their righteousness down the world's throat without it asking. The British don't lack confidence, but we are just too afraid of not being liked if we rant on about our past greatness. Do you really know the British soul at all?

Just been to Asda Wolverhampton.

Me and another bloke were the only two on the car park with the steering wheel on the right !

That was when political correctness didn't exist and I'd say every single one of those benefited from our patronage. In short we civilised them, that is what we were good at. We wouldn't do it today, but that is what great nations did back then. They'd like their indegenous cultures back? Okay then ask them to give us back our cricket, our rugby, our billiards, our military system, our language, our curry making skills! And people hate us for being so flaming helpful.

Good grief. I do not subscribe to the view that the British Empire was entirely pernicious - there were good intentions and even tangible benefits mingled in among the rapaciousness and cultural chauvinism, and on the whole I would say that British history, both at home and abroad, is less ghastly than that of most nations, but the idea that we (or "other great nations") civilised the savages borders on the quaint. The possession of superior military technology does not necessarily imply a higher level of material, intellectual or moral attainment (despite what conquerors down the ages always claim). It is fruitless to speculate whether those nations subject to British rule would be worse or better off now if we had not come along, but the idea that they should be grateful to us is as preposterous as suggesting that I should feel pride (or guilt) for an Empire in which my grandfather grew up in the poorhouse and was sent down the mines when he was twelve, before being packed off in his teens to the killing fields of the Western Front. You should know your history, but you should live in the present.

And in almost every major world changing act of goodness and courage the British have beaten the Americans and most others to it. If there is anyone who should be the stock naughty boy in popular arts then it should be the Yanks or the Germans. We stood up to the Nazis when no one else did and look what thanks we get for it. I say that a lot of Brit bashing is done by jealous people. We deserve a vastly better reputation than we, bizarrely, seem to have acquired.

I wouldn't say they're loved, exactly, but we Brits certainly seem to be the world's favourite villain on the big screen these days.

I really think that's America if anywhere. No one gives a shit about us.
