Jack's voice is boring.
Make Dimbleby talk again. He is fun.
Quote: Steve Sunshine @ October 22 2009, 10:57 PM BSTIt was in Texas actually, my mate lives in Houston, We were mean't to drive down to Galveston and he got lost & we ended up in Bay City (a little bit quiet Bible belty & scary for me.)
You'd be surprised at how friendly people are in the Bible Belt. As long as you don't ridicule them or their beliefs they're the friendliest people you'll ever meet. Show up at the local church with no money or home and someone will cook you a meal and help you find a place to stay.
Quote: Timbo @ October 22 2009, 10:02 PM BSTDifficult to think of a nation more ignorant and dismissive of its own culture than the British, or more specifically, the English. You do not necessarily need to be proud of the past (though on balance our track record compares well enough with other nations), but you should understand the value of continuity with the past in underpinning a sense of shared national identity and common values, and forging a sense of national pride.
The BNP represent all that is worst about Englishness, but they do represent a pride in Englishness, which is the essence of their appeal.
Quite, yes, indeed - on all points.
Quote: Kevin Murphy @ October 22 2009, 9:59 PM BSTTruthfully, no.
But assuming you're referring to Trafalgar, I'm not sure it's any great loss that we don't celebrate it or have the date engraved in our memories.
Did we ever?
I'm sure that we did - but not having been around in the mid-1800s I couldn't say to what extent. I'm also sure that it's a tragic loss.
Quote: Badge @ October 22 2009, 11:05 PM BSTDimbleby usually pitches in when the panellist doesn't answer or is inconsistent.
yes but in griffin's case he is making pre-emptive strikes.

What if me Sooty Tim and Dolly turn up, on our way to a decorating job, with a bag of nails and a few boards of plywood?
Quote: Timbo @ October 22 2009, 11:08 PM BSTyes but in griffin's case he is making pre-emptive strikes.
Not really, he was denying having said lots of things so Dimbo asked which quotes weren't true. Answer was there none.

Then you can build your own damn shelter. Case closed.

I think he's saying it might have been remembered for a time afterwards.

The relaunch of the My Little Pony franchise has rather misjudged the target demographic.

I don't doubt it, but I'd been promised a beach.
And one with it's own theme song.
I never did see Galveston.

The problem is to celebrate our culture and history we have to take the good with the bad. No one has the stomach to seive the shit from the gold.
We may be happier celebrating Trafalgar when we're more guilty over the slaughter in Kenya in the 1950s.
By not owning our past good and bad, we lose our sense of self.
