Our previous president was fairly fluent in Spanish and pro-immigration, by the way.
The U.S. is very lucky in that most of our immigrants are hardworking Christians who strive to fit in. No religious clashes, very few culture clashes (once they learn it's not acceptable to piss in the street or leer at women) and we get tasty food as an added bonus.
Quote: Scottidog @ October 22 2009, 10:30 PM BSTI think that is very disrespectful. 'You don't need a day to remember', WTF?
So, we should just forget what our ancestors did for our country.
Yes. That's exactly what I meant. Damned out of my own mouth.

Woo! Way to intelligently argue your point of view!
(South Park does rule though)

Tim wants to kill Christmas!!!
Yeah, down with Christmas!
And birthdays! As I tell my children, it's incredibly vulgar to make a big deal about them.
Quote: Tim Walker @ October 22 2009, 10:14 PM BSTAgain I think that it's probably just part of the British character to be rather embarrassed about going on about our great achievements. It's rather vulgar, of course. Let the inferior nations hark on about their pasts if they must, but it really is very common.
I would like to agree with your general take on Britishness (though we did not get to rule half the globe without our share of xenophobic yobs), but the danger is that in a crisis of identity those national characteristics are being lost. (I know that I myself never felt more alienated from my fellow nationals than when watching the emoting hordes outside Buck House after Diana snuffed it - not many stiff upper lips on show there, old boy.)

How come whenever you call an American telephone number and get an answering machine - the message is in both English and Spanish?
Is the level of Hispanic immigration so high in the States that you are now officially a bi-lingual country?
Having said that, the Hispanics who I've met in America, came to America because it was America and they want it to remain American.

I lived for many years in a Latino neighborhood in California. I find it fascinating that American Mexican food is to Mexican Mexican food as British Indian food is to Indian Indian food. Lovely example of cross-polination of cultures.

So far, so predicted.

Not just immigration, but reproduction rates. We're not officially bilingual and there would probably be a huge uproar if the government ever tried to enact such legislation, but there are a large number of Spanish-speaking people in this country. Most are bilingual, but a lot of our packaging is now written in English and Spanish.
Within a hundred years or so, the U.S. will have a Hispanic/Latino majority. Many southwestern cities already have a Hispanic majority. Here in San Antonio they outnumber Caucasians by almost 2:1. But it's not like I have to speak Spanish to survive or feel like I'm an outsider. Everyone is very well integrated.
The politicians have their rehearsed lines, but Dimbleby is skewering Griffin nicely and he seems rather ill at ease.
You're being bred of existence honkey!
At least your 'invaders' are Christian. *sigh* Time to tell Mum to throw on her burkha.

I'm rather enjoying that.
He'll (Griffin) end up looking like a victim in some peoples eye, I can see it now.
