The Big Break

No - I'm not talking about bones.

Obviously if you perform you can be "out there" to get spotted.

But for writers only how have most of the succesful new writers made it? Is it who you know? Or has anyone really made it by sending stuff in to producers/TV companies?

Competitions I'm guessing?

You could tie yourself with some performers? You could tie yourself to Charley :P

Just flood the market with your writing, write for yourself, small productions, comedy articles, anything and everything. Just get yourself out there.

What do I know anyway, oh wait... Whistling nnocently

Getting a CV is good. Without even thinking about it my C.V. now includes writng for stage reviews, a comedian and a magazine

Everyone makes it by sending stuff to producers. It's just whether you send it to the right ones and whether they read it.

If you address your script to Ash Atalla at Talkback Thames and put it in a post box he won't get it or read it. If your producer friend knows him and hands it to him saying that it's amazing he probably will.

There's terrible laziness and cynicism in TV regarding new writers as far as i can see. Most unsolicited scripts are terrible so producers look to other areas where they know they can get broadcastable material, even if it's a bit tired. They rely on the best writers breaking through under their own impetus - a sort of survival of the fittest, although many of those who do succeed probably have much more determination than talent.

I think that post sums it up perfectly - unfortunately. I started out looking for ways in first and writing second, but its your work that will do the talking so make sure you've got plenty written done first and start looking for ways to showcase it: comps, clips, audio etc.

This is a really worthwhile thread. Anybody who ignores the wisdom in the last two posts above does so at their peril! Pirate

Godot has hit the nail on the head. There are thousands and thousands of ok even quite good or even very good scripts out there (see Critique or Test Bed on 4laughs) ...but so what?

To really break through as a new and unknown writer you need something truly exceptional!
