My missus has just bought herself a macro lens for her camera. I'm not sure what lens it is at the moment but I was thinking of getting her a ring flash to go with it foor Christmas.
Are they worth having? Are they any use for anything except macro photography?
They look like they range from about £100 - £500. Are the £100 end ones any good?

What are you photographing? Ring flash are only really any cop for close up "Product" Type shooting from what I've used.
I'm not sure really. She's wanted a macro lens for ages, probably for taking pictures of insects and flowers and stuff.
I've heard that ring flashes can be useful for some portrait photography as well but I'm purely a point-and-click merchant so I don't really know what I'm talking about.

On Portraits I suppose you could use ring flash, wouldn't give you control over shadows etc like the big lights though. I'm not a expert or ought just from what I've used is all.
She's not onto using big flashes so far, although she does have a reflector. I think she'd like to go pro one day but she does have a wedding or two to photograph for coming up next year, for friends who like her photos.
I was just wondering whether a ring flash was likely to be a good and worthwhile present for an ethusiastic but talented amateur.

Yeah, she's getting pretty good. It's also quite handy for her to be able to plug the pc through the TV so she can edit photos on a 37" full HD screen.
Probably safest if I just ask her if that would be a good present rather than trying to surprise her with one.
