NewsRevue again! Page 51

Thanks for the welcome Mikey.

The Ross Kemp runner has proved very popular, it came from your original idea and I expanded it somewhat. Although Ross Kemp On...The Buses has proved too esoteric for some.

I would like to point out to all the writers who follow this thread that NewsRevue are ALWAYS looking for new material. Forget which day, week, month it is. If it's up to date and funny, IT GOES IN!

The director of the next run, James Kermack is a great guy and really wants some new, fresh, political satirical material. He said he's not interested in the whole celebrity Jordan X Factor bollocks. Another pointer you might find useful is to keep them short. Anything thing over two pages is too long, at least in my brief experience. If any of you have any questions about how to improve your chances of getting something in the show, I'll do my very best to help. After all, we're all in this together.

I wish you all the best and thank you.

I was wondering if you have any clips up anywhere. Or even some pdf's of show scripts perhaps. I was just getting stuff in regular to Treason before they had venue troubles but I can't quite nail News Revue's style and I can never make it to a show.

Don't worry if this a no can do for any reason - thanks for taking the time to register to offer advice.

Hi B, I'm a big Hicks fan too. The style for NR is basically quick and snappy. It could be a voice over that consists of one line or it could be a reworking of a song. As long as it's satirical in content, that is THE most important thing. As you've seen from the show lists that Mikey has very kindly posted, we work at a million miles an hour. We beat them in to submission, because if you didn't like that sketch, maybe you'll like the next one. You can't please everyone, as we have found. Some bits get a round one night and a tumbleweed the next.

I suppose that's comedy!
Cheers

Cheers for this advice Nick. It's much appreciated that someone point the way!

Dan

I was just getting stuff in regular to Treason before they had venue troubles but I can't quite nail News Revue's style

Funnily enough, I'm the other way round.
I haven't had many sketches/songs in Treason, yet I get stuff in NR every week.

I was wondering if you have any clips up anywhere. Or even some pdf's of show scripts perhaps.

There's no real set in stone way to crack NR.
I suppose you've just got to think "parodies", "plenty of laughs in a sketch then one big laugh at the end" and the fact that it's core audience is made up of middle class people, who seem to prefer clever witty jokes.

If you want examples of sketches I've got into the show, I have a small selection of comedy skethes to read at: http://www.mikeyj.info/read.php

All of that list have been in NewsRevue at some point, apart from OCD Miami and Fish Out Of Water.

I've never got anything into NewsRevue and I've never seen the London show. But I did see the Edinburgh "best of" in August and I was impressed with the pace and number of laughs. So, at the risk of repeating what others have said it seems that short stuff works best, and songs are the biggest audience pleasers. Songs seem to work best when they are very familiar to the audience but they must have a lot of choice comedy moments in them.

Highlights from Edinburgh (which some people on here might have written) were the songs Shitty Shitty Raliways (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang), Quantitave Easing (Sexual Healing) and Israeli Men (It's Raining Men).

There you go. Week 6

So what happens when you get a sketch on to the show? Do they tell you or do you just have to check the running order.

I'm finding it impossible to get stuff on to NR even though I'm having success elsewhere. It is doing my nut in.

Check the running orders chief - I didn't find out I had my first sketch in for months - this forum is a cracking place for it, cheers Mikey J

They don't tell if you get a sketch in.

The first time I knew that I'd got something in was when fellow BCG member Sootyj went to see the show and mentioned he'd seen my sketch in it. That seems like many moons ago now.

That's why myself (or other writers, if they beat me to it) post the weekly running orders here in this thread.

And we know what you mean, Ralphation. A lot of writers on these forums get material on certain shows, but cannot crack others. It is frustrating.

Here's the 1st week on the new run...

Gandhi? Very topical. Errr

Quote: Griff @ November 10 2009, 10:59 PM GMT

Mitchell and Webb did a Gandhi sketch this year. It must be zeitgeisty.

Yeap it must....where is my dictionary?
