Actually, I don't know if that's what women want, but it's certainly what they ask for.
We could try to link this into the fact that there are far fewer women in comedy, even though (IMO) there are just as many funny women around. Perhaps for men, there is a greater urge to do comedy, because they feel it is part of their genetic imperative.

I think women put GSOH because maybe they think if a guy has a sense of humour, he may be less likely to be a jerk.

Excellent point Nogget. My theory is that women don't want to appear as lust-filled beasts only interested in Brad Pitt looks, so they say they want a GSOH. It's the safe and accepted convention, when really they want a f**kmonster.

Jimmy Carr's book has a section on women in comedy, and he reckons that men are more likely to laugh at a joke if a man tells it, than if a women told the same joke. Which I agree with.
However when it comes to what men want, I think that the older you get, the more importance you place on a GSOH. When you're in your 20's, it's mostly about the 'physical', but when you hit your 30's it's about finding a 'life partner'.
I only fancy funny men. Was at a casting today and every single guy there was a male model and I couldn't have felt more turned off. Big arms, sterotypically 'gorgeous' face. and six packs galore - but they were all boring as hell.

While I hope this is not always the case I'm sure your theory is true, on occasion. I have indeed felt that my date was laughing too much at what I'm saying, and because I have very little else to offer other than my moderate appearance, my sad conclusion was that I was seen as an object.
