My mum got a pedigree Golden Retriever (andrex puppy) for £50... because the breeder just couldn't get rid of the puppies she had.
People sell off cross-breed puppies for £250. Most rescues will expect about £70.

On the day we went to get our cat Gladys there were 3 great danes, 2 dobermans, 2 rotties, a sheepdog mix, a bulldog/mastiff mix, and then a Newfoundland/mastiff mix named Ralph that I would have taken home in a heart beat if he didn't outweigh all 3 of my kids combined.
