Clap or chlamydia?
Quote: Nogget @ October 14 2009, 12:49 PM BSTWhy is Chlamydia the only STD that comedians ever seem to talk about?
My best guess is that it's the funniest sounding of the STDs. It's also a rather beautiful sounding word disassociated from what it is. Rather poetic in fact. "Oh, I simply adore Chlamydia!"
Not necessarily due to an STD, but "cystitis" is a now sadly underused comedy word, IMO.

It does sound like a posh girl's name.
It's been over-used now IMO. I'm disappointed when it's used as the punch line,.

Like I have time for STD jokes with all my Gordon Brown material...

It's a funny word - Crabs is quite funny too but the obvious jokes have been done there.
Chlamydia can also sound like a plant or a posh girls name.
As STDs go, it's mostly harmless when men have it but can make women sterile. Bizarrely, it's also very easy for a dude to give a lady Chlamydia but much more difficult for a lady to give it to a dude.
Also, one in five men has some form of Chlamydia and don't even know it.
Aids, Herpes, Syphalis, Gonnoclapia, etc. all have very nasty complications and connotations (including death). Which can sometimes be a bit of downer joke wise. (Not to me though)
Because it's not life threatening or life altering to men, can be treated easily and has few ill side effects, it's the perfect 'family friendly' STD to use in comedy.

Dunno about "Posh"...

Surely you mean 'Candida'?

I must confess to writing a sketch in a pharmacy with this joke.
Pharmacist: Candida?
Woman: No, my name's Debbie.
Crikey, I used the words sounds like, I didn't actually say it was. It's only a few letters between Cressida and Chlamydia - which kind of sound like each other, hence my remark.

Bussell's more a of a lazy, comedy slag.

It's because women have more of an exposed area than men to acquire the virus. Men don't suffer vaginal tears either.
Quote: RubyMae - Glamourous Snowdrop at Large @ October 14 2009, 1:11 PM BST"The clap" is a term for Gonorrhea, NOT Chlamydia.
I was not aware of that, I thought the 'clap' was a generic name for all STI's. Thanks for clearing that up for me Ruby. Not in that way!

I'd suggest some Doxycycline if you wish to clear that up.
