They're the better parts though.

Not amazingly better in my experience.
I'm writing something where one of the characters matches me perfectly. As I am the best person to play a me-like character, that's one part I'll get.

It's terrible when writers do that.
I try not to on the ground that I may not get it! But I based everyone on real people I know.

My point is that when you look at great male roles in theatre and performance , appearance isn't a major factor. Playwrights from Shakespears right up to modern day have written some incrediable and powerful works with men in the primary role. There are many actors in the mainstream who have not got those looks but still get to play these roles and have great careers out of them. You don't have to be Johnny Depp to play Hamlet for example. Great female roles however are sadly not as common, they do exist, but are not as common and the majority tend to be sort "romanticised" figures or comedy roles. It is actually a recognised issue in the industry that young white females will have the toughest time finding good roles and work in more naturalistic theatre because there is basically so many of them in the industry and so few good roles. It's one of the reasons I stopped doing that kind of stuff and started doing physical theatre. There are no set roles and most people don't give a damn about your face.
Weirdly, in terms of films, there seemed to be much better roles for women fifty odd years ago. The likes of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford had rich pickens when it came to roles. Nowadays women are on the scrapheap at 30.

Keep your voice down grandpa, your disturbing the other patients.
The character isn't exactly like me, she's kind of a dark mirror. But she'll look just like me. And sound just like me.

Probably because men gamble, take more risks and their actions impact the lives of so many people. Which I suppose makes better drama.
It doesn't help when even the female playwrites stick to the usual saint / victim / whore representation of women.
Even though it's good to represent women in a positive light all the time, without character flaws, they become dull and secondary.
I'm only referring to theatrical productions - in Hollywood films and video games, women are given a greater depth and their characters are much more interesting.

Cheeky Canauck! I'm younger than you! Just more culturally aware.

If I am an expert, we are all in trouble......
I let the cat out in the garden for the first time this morning. It ended with having to break into next door's garden and climbing a ladder to get him out of a tree. It was quite exciting.
