Not amazingly better in my experience. 
I'm writing something where one of the characters matches me perfectly. As I am the best person to play a me-like character, that's one part I'll get.

It's terrible when writers do that. 
I try not to on the ground that I may not get it! But I based everyone on real people I know.

Weirdly, in terms of films, there seemed to be much better roles for women fifty odd years ago. The likes of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford had rich pickens when it came to roles. Nowadays women are on the scrapheap at 30.

The character isn't exactly like me, she's kind of a dark mirror. But she'll look just like me. And sound just like me.

Probably because men gamble, take more risks and their actions impact the lives of so many people. Which I suppose makes better drama.
It doesn't help when even the female playwrites stick to the usual saint / victim / whore representation of women.
Even though it's good to represent women in a positive light all the time, without character flaws, they become dull and secondary.
I'm only referring to theatrical productions - in Hollywood films and video games, women are given a greater depth and their characters are much more interesting.

I let the cat out in the garden for the first time this morning. It ended with having to break into next door's garden and climbing a ladder to get him out of a tree. It was quite exciting.
