People Who Don't Watch Telly Page 7

More people should watch The Sky At Night IMO. There, I've said it.

I wasn't allowed to watch Roseanne because my mom thought the family was trashy. My family would have needed a major upgrade to get where they were. Some weird kind of reverse snobbery I suppose.

At the middle-class schools I attended there were genuinely kids whose parents would allow them to watch Blue Peter (BBC) but not Magpie (ITV) due to perceived decency and class issues between the two.

My dad used to make us watch it, or his own version which involved a drunk Scotsman dragging us out of bed at 2am to see the stars and be tested on the constellations. You weren't allowed back to bed until you'd get them all correct.

Keeping you away from their husbands were they, Dolly? ;)

Our local PBS station ran Marty Stauffer's Wild America at 2 or 3 in the morning and dad would wake us up to watch it with him. I honestly think he was just afraid to be up by himself that late. :(

True, but don't forget, Magpie had ads. I wouldn't blame any parent for avoiding the ads, especially back then when kids were targeted for all the unhealthy stuff which (in theory) we get less of now. Although I watch the ads with my kids, and get them to analyse just how truthful they are.

I remember when the act of watching TV with your kids was considered to not be 'quality time', but I think it's top quality.

I remember that the BBC had no problems showing a programme promoting Buddhism (Monkey) to us kids on BBC2 at teatime. It was generally a little violent as well in places. No parents complained, no harm was done. (Monkey used to be paired with Moira Stuart and the alien pot-plants of The Adventure Game. What a brilliant way to spend an hour in front of the TV, whilst eating your fishfingers and beans. :) )

Re: Quality time with parents versus telly

Every new parent I know praises kids TV as the unpaid babysitter. Anything that stops their unholy brood from rampaging through the house destroying everything they touch is considered a blessing from God.

Of course spending quality time with your parents is important, in fact, when Christmas dinner is over, I bet you wish they would stay forever as there's probably just not enough stress and criticism in your life.

Monkey was the best ever. I had Chinese friends who got video tapes sent over from relatives, so I got to see loads of episodes around their flat. Even better they lived above the family restaurant, so I often got a rather nice dinner too.

I remember when I figured out that for the actual contestants playing the Adventure Game, it probably wasn't that much fun. And I got a little more depressed. :D

Getting all nostalgic for Monkey now. Always loved the song over the end credits....

Monkey End Credits

Brilliant! :P

I borrowed a DVD of it recently. It's still very good. The priest always confused me, him being a beautiful bald woman.

I always felt sorry for the kids who showed up at the Knighmare studios.

'Ooh, am I going to see some dragons and elves and witches?'

'Just put this bucket on your head and try not to bump into the green screen love.'
