48 Hour Film Project - Jane P

Hi, I'm posting this on here as a couple of people said they'd take a look but I do realise as a short there's a lot that could be improved. Think of it as a first draft!

I was quite pleased with it for our first film though and considering it had to be completed in 48 hours.

We were given the genre 'Fantasy' on Friday evening and had to include an orange, a banker called Jamie Delgado, and the line 'I hope it isn't swine flu'.

None of that was particularly inspiring. We had to write it Friday night, film Saturday and edit/ score by Sunday.

The limited time spent and missing scene (due to light) does show. So to summarise - our plot was that the original Trickster had a curse put on him for being selfish etc and he had to redeem himself by becoming more humble and passing it on to others. By the end he's cured and heads off with Jamie's girlfriend while Jamie loses everything and is starting out with his own rubbish tricks.

One thing I thought went well was the music as we didn't know the composer - someone found his details in Shooting People I think, and we only met at the screening. He's a lovely guy and I'd recommend him if anyone is doing something similar.

I don't know if Simon will or has already posted his link on here but I thought he did a great job too, v stylistic.

:)

I'd recommend anyone have a go at these challenges - we had a great time and it was a useful learning experience.

Very impressive Jane, almost across the board. That sounds like a gruelling schedule. I was 2nd AD on a very low budget feature shoot a few years ago and know how long these things take. A staggering achievement for a single days shooting in my view, well done.

Thanks Steve

If you have any links to the film feel free to share.

Hi Jane, no links. It is available to buy on Amazon though, although, as far as I know, it was never released in cinemas. May have been on TV in the US. 'Miss Monday'.

Good stuff Jane.

A film career calling maybe?

Very good for only a day and with having to fit in those certain objects and lines - they didn't seem shoe-horned. :)

Let's not get carried away. But having said that: given the context and criteria, I thought you did really well.

Why not? It helps me escape the dull numb reality of life.

Exactly BF - where would us creative types be if we didn't get carried away whenever we could?

:)

Thanks Dolly - if you wanted to see 'shoe horned in' you should have seen another entry. OK that's a bit mean but it was obvious they had a script lined up then fitted in what they needed to.

There were some really good ones too though - I agreed with the audience vote at our screening and will look out to see who won at the awards on Monday.

Don, I'll take that as a compliment.

Steve, you're just showing off now - Amazon indeed.

:D

It was very much a compliment, my dear. I enjoyed it. :)

Good stuff.
I'm sure it was hard work in the time given.
Well done.

Well done Jane P and partners! There are a lot of things to like about it - but where are the laughs, eh? This is the BCG, with C for Comedy!!! I would have liked to see more humour. Not enough orange gags, for me...

Having said that it all looked very good (in some places terrific), it made a certain amount of sense (given the time constraints) and the person who did the music did an *excellent* job.

Aye, good score. Looking at the content criteria, my first thought was a banker named Jamie Delgado (son of Roger Delgado) being found dead, hanging from a ceiling fan with an orange in his mouth and dressed in some sort of fetish outfit. The woman who finds him comments: "I hope it isn't swine flu." Probably a bit too obvious though.

I enjoyed it, Jane. It was very 'Twilight Zone' (I'm a fan of all 3 seies and '... The Movie'!). Best performance by far was by 'The Trickster (John Helier). Also, the music was perfect for the film. Your writing with Mike Smith was natural and didn't grate like a lot of drama shorts I've seen on YouTube.

Just one nit-pick; if a guy (especially Jamie) is wearing a designer suit and someone soils it; I think they'd more likely name the designer (if nothing else, to impress). e.g. - "See that? - Bloody Ralph Lauren, this is 'an all".

All in all though; very good job! :)

No, if I was showing off I'd have said the leading actress won an award at the Sundance film festival for her performance. She was really very good, the film itself though, I'd maybe give a 1-2 out of 5. But still not bad for a couple of weeks shooting and £70k ish budget. It was bloody hard work but just the most fantastic time. One of the most enjoyable uses of annual leave.
