Quote: Lee Henman @ October 8 2009, 11:29 AM BSTOne of the times it happened I was in the car with my 7-year-old son. I think I was just scanning the channels when a hysterical woman screamed out "Oh piss off you bastard!" or something like that on a radio 4 play. To be honest I was pretty furious. I consciously try to ensure my son isn't exposed to bad language by me or anybody else around him and it annoyed me that some poxy Radio 4 play had done it in my own car. They'd never get away with on TV at that time of the day. I don't really see the difference.
I think there are worse things for your son to be exposed to than a Radio 4 play. Like a tramps engorged penis.

Good luck with that Lee.

I try to keep tramps' engorged penises away from my son too. I selfishly keep them to myself.

That can't be easy. The schoolyard was full of swearing.

Yes, well I remember when watching an early-morning episode of The Tweenies with my daughters when they were toddlers. Unfortunately, due to an oversight, the BBC had accidentally broadcast an edition of Tweenies Later... where Milo called Bella "a prick-teasing muppet whore" whilst they were all coming down from a MDMA/crystal meth buzz. In response, Fizz called Milo "a cocksurfing uncle-f**king goat hole" and they all went on to sing an upbeat song about how to clean butt plugs.
Despite an apology from the BBC, my kids had been sullied to the point we couldn't look them in the eye anymore and felt it was best to have them adopted.

Don't even joke about that with the state of television today.

Mine was too. But that's kids, not adults. I'd never have dared swear in front of my parents I don't like to do it even now. I've just never allowed adults to swear in front of my kids. Even strangers.
Quote: Kevin Murphy @ October 8 2009, 1:20 AM BSTWell, at least we're not as bad as Aussie telly.
This controversy was picked up by Sky News this morning.
Quote: Kenneth @ October 8 2009, 11:00 AM BSTWell, this can be funny, providing you're not on the receiving end of the abuse.
And you're not a child and it's your Dad saying them.
But then it is funny with hindsight.

That's happened to me in the car too when I've had my daughter with me. Although I was the hysterical woman and we were just having another domestic 'chat'.
As I've said before my daughter hears swearing and is allowed to use the words at home. She very, very rarely does and completely understands that using them at other times could upset some people or get her into trouble at school. She knows they're words that her parents, etc use sometimes that some people think are 'bad'. Still I did love it when she told me the rain was "shitting down".
Quote: Lee Henman @ October 8 2009, 11:21 AM BSTAnother thing that's not usually talked about is swearing on the radio. There doesn't seem to be the same watershed as TV. I've heard loads of "bastards" and "shits" etc on Radio 4 dramas during the day. How does that work then?
The powers that be have an unwritten rule that swearing is most offensive when it's done by uneducated people. It's the same with drugs; coke at dinner parties is de-rigueur, but smack on the street cannot be tolerated.
How typically hypocritical of 'The Man'...

You're so healthy it's sickening.
I happen to agree, wholeheartedly, though.

I don't smack either. (well not children)
I've told my kids they can swear whenever they want to at home. They choose never to do so.
