VAT and the BBC

I finally got round to sending off a couple of standard contracts that have been sitting around the house for ages (combined value circa £20).

After I did so I noticed on the back page that it asked for our VAT registration number and who the certificate was in the name of.

Unfortunately we are not VAT registered, is it OK that it was left blank or do we have to register for VAT before getting any money out of them?

Sorry if the answer is already here, did a search and couldn't find anything.

Thanks

I think it's popped up on threads before and the answer was something like "Unless you're making a tonne of cash out of this gig, don't worry about it."

I didn't. And I was getting £70 :P

I think it was on the Newsjack thread that this came up. If I remember right there's a pretty significant income threshold before you need to be VAT registered and it's fine to leave it blank (probably best to say "not registered" to avoid doubt, but I'm sure you will be paid). Party on!

Its 67K Or thereabouts I think.

Only £67k? Looks like we're in trouble.

Thanks everyone.

How much cocaine do you have stashed in your attic, Bigfella?

You only fill in that bit if you are vat registered.

You have to become vat registered if your annual earnings from self employed writing amount to £68,000 or over.

Be careful there Mikey.

If you get a salary from a job of £20,000 then I think your limit is reduced to £48,000!

Although why am I worrying about these figures?

I'm pretty sure it is the TURNOVER figure, but in the case of writers there have minimum purchases & sales of products, so it will be very close to the EARNINGS figure.

Yes, it's turnover.

And bigfella. I'm not sure about PAYE salaries, as vat thresholds are about self employed income.

I run an internet biz as a sole trader, so that income and writers earnings would be accrued.

I'm sure one of us must be an accountant, or work in a tax office.

One of you or bigfella? Sounds like an unlikely shot, but I'll go for it. What should I do if my P60 shows an inaccurate amount?

Tell your employer! With your evidence!

Although if they use SAGE I'm not sure how it can be wrong.

That will be £25 please.

No not an account! ( Or the tax man )
