:D

Hate to sound patronising to our American friends, but perhaps The Boat That Rocked was a little too vague for a US audience to guess what the film might be about? Pirate Radio is pretty much a "does what it says on the tin" title.

I haven't seen the film, but generally I think "Dr Kermode" is a wanker.

Anybody who's favourite film is the bloody Exorcist must, indeed, be wankery by nature. He bloody loves that, doesn't he.

II think it looks really good. Jackie Earle Haley is an awesome actor. He's the guy who played Rorschach in "The Watchmen" movie.

It's his casting that has me interested. The bit in the trailer where he's about to get burnt to death, and he rips off his coat to reveal that familiar stripey jumper, is pretty cool.

What, it's a great film! Shame on you, sir. One of the Doctor's other favourites is The Wicker Man (the original obviously), what about that?

It is great. The Wicker Man too.

Excellent film. The Exorcist is ok, maybe better when it came out.

Yes, I've no problem with the Wicker Man. That's a great film. Proper classic.

As for the Exorcist, I saw it in the 80's on what must have been a dodgy copy. I guess that didn't help my appreciation of it, nor the fact that I watched it in the early hours of the morning, specifically to have the shit scared out of me. And I just didn't find it that scary. Thought some of it was a bit silly, really.

I shall have to sit down with it at some point for a more adult reappraisal.

That was my problem, I'd heard it was 'the scariest film ever' and it just wasn't. I've had scarier shits.

But that isn't my problem with Kermode, he just annoys me and hardly ever likes the films I do.

I thought it was quite unnerving, great atmosphere. I wouldn't really say it scared me, in the main, but it certainly spooked me to some degree. Even though half the cinema was laughing at it the first time I saw it. Fools.

Yeah, it's always difficult when you watch something with that kind of hyperbole hanging over you. Hard to be that objective or enjoy the thing as much as you should.

I think that somebody telling you that something is brilliant is possibly the worst kind of spoiler.

I think The Omen scared me more tbh.

I remember a friend dragging me to see Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, going on and on about how amazing it was. It wasn't.

Ah, now you're talking. The Omen and Wicker Man are both superb.

For horror films, I prefer flicks like The Shining and the original Halloween to it, but The Exorcist is still a great movie.

By the same token, I'm quite keen to see Invention of Lying, from the point of 'it surely can't be as bad as people are saying'.

Some of my favourite scary films are by David Lynch: Fire Walk With Me and Lost Highway. Not strictly horror but quite, quite disturbing.
