For those unaware of his crimes -
In 1977, Polanski, then aged 44, became embroiled in a scandal involving 13-year-old Samantha Gailey (now known as Samantha Geimer. Polanski was initially charged with rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious act upon a child under 14, and furnishing a controlled substance (methaqualone) to a minor. These charges were dismissed under the terms of his plea bargain, and he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of engaging in unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.
Polanski went to Switzerland to pick up a lifetime a achievement award, but now he's going back to America in chains.
The Froggy Minister for Harbouring Child Rapists has said he's very unhappy that Polanski has been arrested over 'an unfortunate incident in his past'.
I for one, hope he rots in jail until he be very dead. Wouldn't it be great if they put him in the cell next to Charles Manson?

I can confirm that Mr. Townshend was actively campaigning against child pornography because he posted his writings on his website prior to his arrest and I read every one of them. He notified authorities about the photo he saw (after stupidly paying to enter the website) and while they initially denied it, they eventually admitted it was true.

Initially, Phoenix Survivors (a web based support group run for and by victims of child sexual abuse) loudly condemned Mr Townshend.
However, moved by an overwhelming response from Mr Townshends fans, calling for us to take a 'much closer look' at this case, we did, and it became absolutely clear that Mr Townshend did indeed do 'a very stupid thing ' which we do indeed condemn, however, it was also absolutely clear to us that Mr Townshend is by no means, any kind of child molester.
We feel the justice system got it wrong on this occasion and was far too heavy handed, we do not believe that his name belongs on the Sex Offenders Register, (as it makes a complete mockery of what the SOR is supposed to represent) and we wish Mr Blunkett would remove his name from it.
Mr Townshend's suicide would have been both a terrible loss and a terrible injustice, he is a good and decent man who did a very stupid thing and has MORE than paid for it. He has always been very honest about what happened and we feel he deserves our trust. We hope he can recover from this and we wish him well for the future.

Yes, he has more than enough evidence to back up his claims. He, as far as I can make out, is only guilty of being a bit stupid in this case. And that's it. Well, I suppose 'It's Hard' was a bit shit.

As Dabutt has shown above, he was vindicated. Obviously that doesn't matter in some peoples eyes, mud sticks. Especially this kind of mud. The naked children kind.

Well, that was kind of my point, but yeah...
I blame the media for telling people how they must think, and people for letting themselves be told how they must think by the media.
Pete Townshend may be the most honest celebrity there is. This interview is very interesting reading, as Pete and the interviewer pull no punches and lay out the entire episode in great detail:

Failure to do so carries a five-year jail sentence.
Mr Townshend was one of 1,600 people arrested in the UK from details given to an American child porn website.
His arrest was part of the Operation Ore investigation into accessing child porn on the internet."

His actions broke the law, no matter what the reasons were behind the law breaking; this being the case he has to be punished.

I believe Townshend's name has now been removed from the list.
Gary Glitter was found with thousands of pieces of child pornography on his computer. The police confiscated more than a dozen of Townshend's computers and found no child porn whatsoever.
Gary Glitter has numerous arrests for having sex with underage girls. Townshend has never been charged with anything of the sort.
Townshend contacted the police as soon as he saw a newspaper article that said a famous rock star was under investigation. Glitter hops from country to country to avoid prosecution.
