Carry On London Page 4

Isn't the problenm with the Carry On films that their success was very much tied to the rather oddball cast (Kenneth Williams, Sid James, Bernard Breslaw, etc) and a very specific type of humour that reached it's peak in the seventies and then died away. For better or worse, we've moved on, and any new attempts to redo the films aren't going to be filled by todays top comedians, but ex soap actors, reality stars and anybody else who's been in Heat.

Agree entirely. And with Writer2k as well, though I'm still not familiar with how to do multiple quotes.

Anyway...

...the best Carry Ons worked because they had an oddball cast and the era was one in which innuendo worked in its own right (and not in some post-modern way) due to the sexual mores of the time. It's no surprise that they got really crap in the seventies - there was no reason to go oo-er any more, because there was a lot of oo-er in real life, other films and media in general anyway. And the great Talbot Rothwell wasn't doing the scripts any more.

I'm afraid that any new Carry On will be a celebrity-fest and will end up like Spiceworld. Unlike that film, I won't be going to see it at the cinema.

EDIT: Nearly forgot to *wave fist* at Sooty for joining the Chaplin-bashers.

Quote as normal, then hit post. Then quote the second post you want to, and again hit the post button. If your reply is the last one in the thread (ie no one else has replied whilst you were doing the other quote(s)), and that second (third, fourth, etc) post is within 15 minutes of the first one, it'll just add onto the end of the first, rather than creating numerous ones.

If that makes sense.

Basically, the board automatically merges double-posts.

Carry on Films had some amazing talents, working for bollox all money. Also saved on sets (Wales as the North West frontier),

And Camber Sands as the desert.

Sorry Aaron - just saw your post.

And also who is this Carrie on-heat?

Rubbish scripts?! That is a dirty, dirty lie. Angry

Hear, hear.

I think the vast majority were written by a certain Talbot Rothwell (great name). I haven't done the research but I assume that wasn't a collective pseudonym, was it? If not, anyone know anything about the bloke?

He was a bloody genius in my book. Also wrote Up Pompeii! (the first series anyway) etc. Well worth checking his credits - you're likely to go "ohhhhhhhhh!" a lot as you notice similarities and things slot into place.

So he did... Is he still alive?

Died in 1981. Sad loss I reckon - only 65.

:(

Did anyone see this on BBC web site?

For crying out loud. It's just comedy!

Nothing just anything.

Is there any hope left that Carry On London will be made?

Even though Peter Rogers has died I was expecting them to make it "in his honour" or something

Would it even work?

Carry on Columbus was awful.

You can't recreate magic like the original Carry On films IMO.

I agree it wouldn't be the same. I think Colombus is watchable when not looked at as a 'Carry On' it's a naff British Comedy film really.

I think it could work to a point though. besides it's been in the pipeline for so long I actually want to see how bad/ good it is!

I think it could only be saved by using technology to super impose the regulars in some way. Maybe as bystanders or cleverly using old lines in the new script.

Y'know, I came back to Carry On Columbus a couple of years ago. Decided to set aside my prejudices and just watch it. And it's a bloody funny film. True that it might not live up to some of the Carry Ons, but it's not bad. And IMO funnier than Carry On Screaming, which everyone seems to adore.

As for Carry On London, Gawd knows. It was said towards the end of 2008 that all of the sets and props and everything was built and in storage at Pinewood, ready for filming to begin early 2009. God knows what happened after that. I do still hope it gets made though, as we need some really silly comedy again. I'd love to be able to write one myself.
