It was a pretty bad book, but I think the movie was even worse.
I liked them both. But the gratuitous sex scenes in the movie tips it.

Tom Selleck was good as the lead.
Thank you everyone I shall pass off your well thought arguments as my own except maybe Levil's and Sunshine!
Mr Men The Movie: Mr Tickle Strikes Back.

I read the novel (not short story) long before seeing the film, and was very much aware that the film removed a lot of complexity.
I think generally you get a more favourable impression of the film if seeing it before reading the book. I have always loved the film True Grit, but I doubt I would have cared for it half so much if I had seen it after reading the wonderful novel. (Though it probably helps that the film is more faithful than most awful Hollywood reimaginings.)
Get Carter!
The Itchy & Scratchy Movie
Gone With the Wind
the book was kind of tedious, the movie is great!
I think it totally relies on whether you read the book first, or whether you saw the film first.
If you read the book first, then I tend to think, that in the film, there was so much left out. If you see the film first, and then read the book, I have in the past thought that in some cases it is hardly the same story.
I just guess it boils down to who is the screenwriter.
Battlefield Earth
The 39 Steps makes a much better film. I was really disappointed with the book!

BOOOOO!
Some of the Bond books. I prefer Goldfinger the book in some ways, but still love the film, but I think the film version of Casino Royale was a big improvement on the book (and not only for the obvious reasons ).
