Canadian Comedy? Page 2

There are schloads of Canadians in America doing comedy. In fact they are all over American comedy TV. And they all know each other.

One of my teachers at SECOND CITY LA was Deborah Theaker who is a writing partner with Scott Thompson from KIDS IN THE HALL as well as a cast member of every Christopher Guest movie. I only got a glimpse into that small world through her, but it's a very tight community.

Yeah, all the best American actors are Canadian. :) Their market is just much much bigger, so it makes sense to migrate.

The best Canadian comedy is Trailer Park Boys, from Series 1-5 that is, the last couple of series where a drop in quality but it's still a great show. It's on Paramount over here.

You can get Series 1&2 boxset in HMV, that's the only series released over here at the minute. Best to buy the Region 1 DVD's off Amazon.

KIDS IN THE HALL were great, why isnt that available over here?

Actually, Ive just looked on Amazon and theres a 'Best Of' coming out on region 2 this month!

I have to admit the only copy I have is on VHS. Love it so!

She is pretty. She must be stopped.

There are some good Canadian comedies but sadly we just don't have the market or budgets to compete with either the Brits or Americans on this front, hence the reason Canadian talent heads south. Nonetheless there are some and you can probably view them on YouTube!

Here are titles of shows I didn't see mentioned in this thread:

Corner Gas (very successful show with gentle humour)
Little Mosque on the Prairie (tame but cute)
This House has 22 Minutes (political satire. Of special note, see their regular bit entitled "Talking to Americans". hee-hee)
Billable Hours (only seen one episode, seemed ok...)
Rent-a-Goalie (heard it's good)
Trailer Park Boys (has strong following)
Codco (from the 1980s and based on a comedy troupe from Newfoundland which was surprisingly edgy and absurd)

And if you have never seen any SCTV I strongly urge you to check them out. The show has loads of recurring wonderful, absurd characters. The same goes for the Kids in the Hall (long live the Chicken lady!)
