British Comedy Guide

More 2007 Pilots not picked up.

The first list was for NBC only. This is for the rest of the networks (and includes the Vicar of Dibley remake which didn't make the cut.) My favorite title is the last one on the page. Just plain wrong. He he he! And there's another which is very similar to a show I'm developing myself. I'll let you guess which one.

That's hilarious.
How did I not hear about that?

Wow, that's a lot of shows not ordered! I hate to think how much money has gone down the drain there.

Thanks for posting Erik.

I recognise good writers, actors, directors and producers there and yet none have been picked up. Shows how hard it is.

I presume the one by Victoria Pile and the police is a US Green Wing.

Also, how easy is it to get a British show picked up by the US? I used to think it had to be very successful (OFAH, Fawlty Towers, OFITG) but now shows like I'm With Stupid, Green Wing and the IT Crowd are attempting it. Are they that stuck for ideas?

It depends what station, David. Monty Python, for example, started on a single public-access cable station (if I recall correctly), and just exploded. As I understand it, the PA channels tend to be more open to overseas content, so if a show can get itself on there, it's got a hell of a lot more of a chance.

Pretty much, and try to go with proven (i.e., aired) shows. If something works in the UK, it might work in the USA. It worked with THE OFFICE, and it bombed with COUPLING. But at least they think they might have a chance rather than taking a sitcom by Joe Shmoe from Sandusky, Ohio.

Most people who get to present their own sitcom in the USA have to go through the ropes of writing for a show first and getting known before they get a development deal. There is a great book called "Conversations with my Agent" about the process where two Show Runners (what Russell T. Davies does for DOCTOR WHO) chronicle their journey from the show they worked on to their very own sitcom. Part real, part satire: it's a very funny book and captures how hard it is to make a show. And in their case, a failed show that lasted 6 episodes.

And think of all the shows that have now made it that will not last 4 or 5 episodes into the season. It's cut-throat.

But that's Hollywood. They buy way more than they need in the way of scripts and pilots just in case. I was just reading how THE BRADY BUNCH wasn't picked up by anybody for years until the movie YOURS, MINE AND OURS came out and Paramount said "Hey, don't we have a proposal for a show like that somewhere?"

Yes, that's how I got hooked on British TV. A local PBS channel on Friday nights back in the late 70's. I would watch Python and Fawlty Towers and just sit there awestruck, because it was something so different and yet so brilliant.

It's one of those things that you want to tell all your friends about, and expose them to what you see as brilliant. And I think that, in some ways, this is what is happening when British shows are reworked for US TV. I thinks it's wrongheaded to recreate them, for the most part, just show the originals! But I think that at least SOME of these network people DO appreciate the original British shows and want to share that in the US market. It just gets effed up in committee and they decide to remake it... oh well.
