Excuse my indie roots but the following's best works were their first:
Kasabian Kasabian
Hard-Fi Stars of CCTV
Embrace The Good Will Out
Arctic Monkeys Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
Maximo Park A Certain Trigger

F**kin' BRILLIANT!
Looking at the tracks there... In which comedy was Paddy McGinty's Goat referenced? Was it Brass Eye - I can't even remember in what context...
EDIT: No, silly me, it was that sketch in Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle!
EDIT: I want to hear O'Rafferty's Motor Car! Now!

I think West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum is even better.
I agree with the Artic Monkeys though and would add Franz Ferdinand to the list.

There's a TV news reporter called Paddy McGinty, or something very simillar and I can't help shouting the word 'goat' every time is name is mentioned on the news.

Love the effort with the visuals.

God bless those bog-brained Paddys!

Tee-hee! I wondered who'd be the first.
Well, you wouldn't have your trains from Bristol to London without them.

I don't. It's *very* good, granted, but Kasabian is pretty much perfect from start to finish. I'm not dissing any other stuff, by any of the other bands btw, it's just that their first albums are *so* good, they'd be hard to beat.
I thought Coldplay's Parachutes wouldn't be bettered, but they did it straight away with A Rush Of Blood To The Head.
The Music's eponymous debut is also probably their best, in terms of tracks. The second is more polished and holds better together as an album, but it doesn't blow you away like the first did. Third can't beat it either.
Agree about Franz Ferdinand too.

Maybe it's because I'm listening to it a lot at the moment.
The Specials - The Specials is a good example of a perfect debut album.
Going all eighties:
Lexicon of Love is a great album that ABC never bettered.
Similarly Soft Cell and Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret.

For me their final album, L.A. Woman, is their finest work.

Prefer the latest one, Humbug. It's a more interesting piece of work, though I would agree their are more obvious, heads down thrills on the first album.

It's very difficult to get into. Still trying.
First album's Fake Tales From San Francisco: "You're not from New York City, You're from Rov'rum!" -- second best lyric of all time.

This beats it for me, from the same song:
"Yeah but his bird thinks it's amazing, though
So all that's left
Is the proof that love's not only blind but deaf"
