For consolation, I wondered what (recording) artists never bettered their first effort. (Minimum of 4 albums, please.)

The Doors - Maybe
Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Warren Zevon (discounting his juvenilia) - Definitely

I think (What's the Story) Morning Glory? is a better album, but I've never been the biggest Oasis fan...

You might well be right - I did wonder. It's very different to the first two - Pale Blue Eyes et al.

I think it's the absence of John Cale that makes the third album so different to the first two.
And, OK, Strange Days and Excitable Boy may be better than my nominated albums.

Most dinosaur grands from the 70s cannot boast with the debut album being their best, apart from a song or two. Deep Purple, Led Zep, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, UFO, Budgie, Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, The Sparks, Scorpions, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Yes, Rush, Kiss, the list is endless. Well, The Beatles as well.
Rainbow had a decent debut, though. The Doors, too.
But they were all allowed to take their time and deliver the goods eventually. Nowadays, if your first single flops, you're out for good.
The list of best debuts would be "River Runs Red" by Life of Agony, Saviour Machine's self-titled, Iced Earth's self-titled, Ayreon "The Final Experiment" and, well, Guns N Roses "Appetite For Destruction".
I'm sure you know these bands very well

Yes, there are those who also consider the Jethro Tull's debut "This Was" as their best, and Black Sabbath's S/T as their best.

I think it's a very close run thing with In It For The Money.
I will add The Smiths by The Smiths, The Golden Age of Wireless by Thomas Dolby, Is This It by The Strokes and (for the Ben Volpeliere-Pierrot lovers amongst us) Keep Your Distance by Curiosity Killed The Cat.
