Gervais and Merchant

I was just reading the Office thread in another section, and it got me thinking, do Gervais and/or Merchant ever receive scripts from writers? Afterall, they do Direct, as well as write and perform.

I'm sure most people in their position receive lots of scripts. Either read them for a laugh or put em on the pile aka the bin.

Or do you mean other pro writers? Are you asking if Marc P has forwarded them a copy of Doctors?

Off/on Topic.

I was listening to some of the earliest XFM podcasts recently.
I noticed that Stephen Merchant calls Ricky by his surname.
"Well you say that Gervais, but.."

The dynamic seemed to change a bit soon after that.

Now he calls him "Sir"?

I think they met Karl soon after that, so he didn't need to bother talking to Ricky.

I was just thinking, they're so big and popular now that it would be like hitting the jackpot if they took an interest in your script.

Neither Ricky or Steve Merchant look at scripts from unknown writers.

Not exactly true. The 'Invention of Lying' script, written by virtual unknown Matthew Robinson, was read by Gervais. They subsequently co-wrote/ directed the film:

They do sometimes look at unknown scripts and videos from actors as well. If you're lucky enough to get your script read by them and they REALLY like it they will contact you.

This is what I've heard through the grapevine.

You should send them 'Back To Class'.

Yes! And I now look quite the fool.

Anyway, Catskillz, you may as well send G+M a copy, but I wouldn't hold out much hope. Best to concentrate on getting in with production companies.

Yep, he did.

And the motto is: Public putdowns are dangerous beasts. Handle with care.
:)
I'm just glad James Cotter is actually a very likeable and affable person, whatever people think of his output to date. I'm a big and unashamed fan of James Cotter, the person.
