Time 4 bed Wave Are you coming?

Sorry, there's lots more beer to be had. Angelic

My $250 Dell 10v came with a 120 GB hard drive. A lot of the netbooks have only flash/solid-state drives.

Yeah, I've noticed a few of those bigger HDs. I'll have to do some research when I come 'round to getting one. Must sleep now, enjoy the beer and don't wake me when you come up.

What would you dual boot? XP and Win7? Pleased

Why would I want to do that?

A somewhat up-to-date compatibility matrix for OS X on netbooks:

Looks quite useful, thanks. :)

For Aaron's benefit, I'm liking Windows 7. I wish they hadn't removed most of the "make it look and act like Windows 95" features that I've been using under XP. I miss the old fashioned Windows Explorer, start menu, etc.

I think I read about some skinnability which will bring that back if you really wish.

That's good to know. Are netbooks easy to upgrade? Or is it by their very nature, not to be upgradable?

With the price of components, you'd be an idiot to try and upgrade rather than just buying a new one.

Hardware-wise? I think there's a fair bit of deconstruction required for memory and hard drive replacement, but that's about all you can replace. I'd recommend getting a hands-on experience with one before you make the (rather minuscule) plunge. The biggest sticking points are screen size and the tiny and (usually) lousy trackpads. I use a mouse with mine.

And the (usually) cut-size keys!

I've read about that, but I've decided that I should bite the bullet and familiarize myself with the standard OS if I want to stay even slightly current with the Wikked Wayze of Windoze.

I'm told that those are often mind-bendingly slow, even more so above a certain size - I think just 4GB. Don't recall the specifics, but I'll certainly be after a HDD model.

And the (usually) cut-size keys!

We have a pull-out terminal in one of our equipment racks that has a keyboard that was obviously designed by a blind man. Even a concerted effort to look at the keys while typing ends in tears.

Haha. Yeah, I can imagine. What layout is it (supposed to be)?

If I had to guess, it's some sort of Unix-y thing incomprehensible by anyone without a ponytail and 3 days' worth of crumbs in their greasy beard.

That'll be billwill then...

I guess he's not as tidy as he looks in his photos.

Hi, Bill! Wave
