Sitcom Trials Autumn '09 Page 31

I tried to make my first word funny. One word. Character driven. Time will tell. And it's not helpful to be giving advice after the horse has done it's business, but in live comedy, well all comedy really you want to get the audience laughing as soon as possible. It's a technical thing establishing the relationship you have with your audience. You want to do it certainly within the first minute. Get them laughing early and they'll laugh all the way through if you give them the opportunity to do so.

I would think if you are picked for performance you will have the opportunity to put that joke back in.

:)

so if James et al have a policy at stopping at the first page of things they aren't inspired by then my chance may be screwed.

yep, me too. I don't think the good stuff comes into play until page 2 of my script. Teary hopefully they'll read atleast 2 or 3 pages before throwing it away.

Yes I have to admit to much head scratching when first deciding which of my pieces I was going to adapt for this event. For a normal 30 min draft I'm quite happy to take a couple of pages/mins to build the scenario before the first real funny bit, but I did come to the conclusion that for this event that would most probably not be a good idea. I think for this sort of 'in front of audience' trial thing, you definitely want to be going in v early with the funny stuff, that's quite right.

I didn't get an acknowledgment. Sad face.

Sorry, a couple may have fallen through the cracks when sending out acknowledgements. David, we've definitely seen your script, so don't worry about that.

"Doomuth", if you PM me (assuming you don't want to out yourself here) with your real name or anything else I can identify your e-mail with, I'll check that we got it.

James

Good show chaps. ;)

At last actual proof I exist. Fantastic!

Thanks for the confirmation, James.

I got an acknowledgement.

I'm going to be extra productive and start work on my Sitcom Trials '10 entry.

Just wanted to add a big thank you to James Parker for letting me know my script had arrived when I didn't receive a confirmation email.

The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled...

Another thanks to James for putting my mind at ease.

Cheers.

My mind won't be at ease until I know whether or not I've been picked. Huh?
