Cool, what was bad about the Comedy Store?

Danny is talking about the famous King gong show, that is the hardest most brutal new act night around. Its more like the gladitator pits of old where everyone just tries to last as long as they can (I did 38 seconds) and people get gonged off before they reach the mike in some cases if they just don't like the look of you.

Hearing 4-5 hundred people boo you off is quite an experience so I wouldn't do it until you have a shit hot 5 minutes and are confident enough to enjoy it for what it is.

Jeez. What do you get if you win?

Huge respect(all the other open mic promoters will snap you up cause they can put King gong winner on their flyers) and an 5 minute spot on a regular Comedy store night, a couple of my mates have won it and one of them is doing his 1st 10 minute spot at the store in November.

Did you acheive it? Unless you break big, is it possible to make a living out of standup? Even then it's short term cash I guess.

Yeah, it took a while though.

I hope to give it up one day to just concentrate on writing comedy for television.

That's the dream...

It all sounds rather vulgar and undignified to me. Still, I suppose for coke-heads and ne'er-do-wells... Unimpressed

Ha ha, and the next dream after comedy writing? :)

You'll be down to our level one day Mr. Walker. And when that happens you won't be having any of my coke, oh no.

Danny - did you post a link to your standup ages ago? Can't seem to find it.

Stan,

My First Gig.

Yep, that's exactly the experience I meant about the Comedy Store, a bit too brutal for me. But my first experience of it was a good one, and got sufficient laughs to remind me why I do it, and got back some of the confidence I'd lost on the circuit.

Love it. Some great gags!

@DannyJB1 ... yes that was very good. Where are you now career wise? Have you ever been paid or have you spent a year or so doing 5-10 minute opens?

To be fair I've been doing it 18 monhs but very, very sporadiacally I am notoriously bad a booking gigs, and only done some recently through being pushed by a fellow stand-up (well pushed \ nagged she's female of course (and luckily doesn't read these boards).

The one paid gig I did have sadly was when I had swine flu ... even then right up to the last minute I was thinking of going, I have a paid 20 in December but in between that very little open mic stuff, this latest gong in Newcastle has re-kindled my enthusiasm, so will get on the agents cases and straight away... in 3 months I might have some gigs, ah such is the stand-up's lot.

I have an agent that I am the emergency backup for when he needs someone quickly (as he knows how bad I am at getting bookings).

So that's where my career is at...

Daddy Maz has not been going (technically) as long as me but has put in a LOT more hours and I suspect, I lot further down the path.

Cheers Danny,

But I think you're not giving yourself credit here, I'm no way near a paid 20!
Unless you wanna do a double act ;)

I went to see stand up last night at a well known comedy club, and I was really surprised at how badly behaved the audience was. We were seated close to a Hen's table that were so loud and rude, they paid no attention to the acts on stage at all.

I felt sorry the acts, all that hard work, late nights, and hours perfecting it for an unappreciating crowd. Previously, I'd thought that performing at one of these clubs would the pinnacle of any stand-ups career, after last night, I'm not so sure.

Which Jongleurs was that then?

Which Jongleurs was that then?

:)

Ironically that was my gig on Friday so that really hits the mark. And yes, it was a nightmare. Wasted Stag dos and Hen parties absolutely do not want a guy on stage doing comic poems and surreal one-liners.

Ah well, I survived. And had the whole green room experience and met some brilliant comedians who have been on the circuit for years. It was interesting to see how they delt with the crowd! I left after the first half, but it must've only got worse for the guys going on later.

was it a Jongleurs, then?

were you there as part of the FHM thingie?

I was compering Jongleurs Leicester and we had two open acts on Friday. Only one turned up though.
