Well I'd agree if we were granting automatic citizenship to Commonwealth citizens. That stopped with HongKong. We need to look at who's coming into the country.
EU citizens. Tough luck there, we want to trade as part of the EEC? They're part of the package. When some suggests another meaningful trading block we can join I may change my mind.
Skilled immigrants from abroad. Until we sort out our lamentable education system that reduces Uni to a drunken kindegarden, we need them. Bigger grants for medical degrees, nursing etc. (It's worked for social work and teaching).
Genuine assylum seekers. Are we so very poor? Some poor sod has to be chopped up in Siera Leone or beheaded in Iraq? So my studio flat can be a little cheaper?
Fake assylum seekers and other illegal immigrants. Actually a minority and one that could be sorted out by an efficent compassionate system.
The problem is the massive wealth diferential around the world. When life stops being shit in Africa, China and Pakistan etc we will see far, far less immigration. And that means paying more for your trainers and companies that operate sweat shops being prosecuted.
I also think immigration should be a centrally run EU issue, with a central clearing house/accomadation for assylum seekers. I also think countries like Rumania whose racist policies against it's own citizens create a refugee problem should be kick out of the EU.
And as for overcrowding? THat's due to housing benefit encouraging a general drift of the inadequate towards the metropolises. No council housing or benefit unless you have a job to goto. And an expectation that companies must invest properly in failing cities. Internal migration is also a problem.
I also suspect part the reasons we've been choking on Linyan dick for some weeks is that Libya is one of the crucial parts of the immigration trail from Africa. I think our humiliation may be part of a deal to close this route.
And final thought. When our government stops using; dubious employment agencies for all the serious jobs in immigration things may get better. I am sick of blowjobs for passports at Lunar House or BNP members who were kicked out of the prison service working at Yarlswood.
The immigration service is a mismanaged, privately run disaster area, that sums up all that's wrong with the market lead stupidity of the last 30 years.

This is what I've never understood about genuine asylum seekers, if I lived in a country where someone wanted to chop off my head, I would move to the next available country where someone didn't want to cut off my head. That would be my primary concern.
So if I lived in Mozambique, I'd get on a bus and move to Kenya, I wouldn't get on a plane and travel six thousand miles to another continent where I couldn't speak the language and have no guarantee of being able to stay.
Of course, if an asylum seeker from Mozambique goes to Kenya, he won't be given a flat, money, food, etc. because they're not as soft / wealthy as we are. So we are to blame for being the world's human dustbin.
I've got no problem being a 'nice' country that helps look after people, unfortunately the rest of the world is taking the piss.

Well yes but there's no point running somewhere that will; sling you straight back, treat you even worse or stick you in a TB ridden refugee camp. The fact that our country doesn't is not something to be ashamed of and isn't takne advantage over as much as people think. Most people do pop to the country next door and get screwed over.
As for free food, flat etc. You only get that when your claim is approved, which almost never happens first time around. So look forward to months of no food/accomadation/money or right to work. Followed by a refrshing stay in Yarlsford and then a quick flight back home, assissted onto the plane by some guy to thuggish to be a doorman.
I'd have to have the piss really taken, before I was comfortable about people being trapped in Siera Leone or Libya.
That said I used to do a lot of hoem visits with assylum seeking families. Where did they get 4 mobiles, satellite TV and a TV thrice the size of mine?

5. A massive increase in military and emergency services spending
6. A strict immigration policy that works on a merit points system
7. The BBC must spend a minimum of 50% of the license fee on programming
8. EU links to be maintained for now
9. Free University loans / grants for students achieving qualifications in much needed areas such as science
10. Massive tax incentives to companies and individuals to buy British made products
Once the UK becomes the tax haven of choice, we will be wading knee deep in piles of money and unemployment will be a thing of the past. Yay!
