Do it! Just do it, it's the most amazing buzz... I would recommend it to anyone.

I will one day, I am writing material now. Just getting alot of it together really, and will just see how it goes. I bet it is a massive buzz.

:)

A couple of people on courses have told me one of the biggest mistakes comedians make starting out is that they have to keep writing new material, it is far more important to hone your current set by tweaking, adding and changing.

If you see most of the big comedians (as I was lucky to see Sarah Millican twice recently, it's always the same set with occasional tweaks to what works and what doesn't.

My set is basically the same for the past 2 years with additions and tweaks! If it works it stays in, if not it gets replaced.

This is something which is really hard to wrap my head around (I totally believe you and have heard the same thing from others). Just seems odd that I can just take the same 5-10 minutes I have round and round. Still am going to give it a go.

Quite a few gigs on there. Am going to fire off some emails soon.

I had an e-mail this morning - got a gig tonight in Swansea! So I guess having material on hand is a relief for emergencies like that.

Cheers for the links friday - will check them out later.

Not sure about the buzz yet... nope, still blind terror.

As I haven't posted the link to my stand-up anywhere else apart from the BCG, it would seem that someone here thinks I've stolen all my material from Jenny Eclair.

Just wanted to clarify that I am not familiar with Jenny's work (she was a bit before my time), but I will check her out as she's obviously a funny lady. Wave

Is she the one who does Grumpy Old Women?

You didn't seem very grumpy or old.

I saw that reply on YouTube.
However the accusation seems to have been removed since you posted the above comments.

It's a real shame that someone felt the need to post something like that, but your conscience is clear, you know you didn't steal anything, so just try to ignore it.

:)

Nah - it's still on there. And it's nothing like Jo Brand! Although that is high praise (love JB). What a horrible comment - have added one of my own and given it the deserved 5 stars, although I guess it's taking time to come through though. ComedyBex doesn't sound like anyone on the board.

I have to say Angie, I really liked your stand up rountine and don't be dishearted by the YouTube comments which are mostly made up by idiots anyway.

I'm having writer's block at the moment but I'm going to go back to writing my material in a few days.

Just watched Funny People ... found a lot there I could relate to now about writing and performing. And the online extras (esp Raaaaaaaaaaandy) were really cool, esp as Aziz Ansari (&BJ Novak) are sort of my models.

Nice little motivator for the next two gigs I have lined up.

YouTubers know nothing.

Had a good-ish gig last night, sadly my lack of hair has now killed my killer opener so got to start thinking of another.

Got a 20 minute slot in December, should really think about writing some more stuff for it, want to try and do a lot of stuff I can interchange for different sets.

Is there a right age to start performing stand up comedy, I'm 21 going on 22 and I admire the fact that comedians like Russell Howard and Jack Whitehall are performing stand up and are relatively young. My problem is that I get nervous quite easily and it shows and that isn't good in front of an audience.

I don't think it matters pal. If you're funny, you're funny.

Doesn't matter how old you are.

Having said that, my little spoilt cousin, Rosie, who is 8, told a joke at the dinner table last week...and it was prettty shit..so.

Well, Bill Hicks started doing proper stand-up gigs when he was 14...

As regards the nerves thing, it's nerves which does for most new stand-ups. Unless you can quickly develop a "f**k it" attitude to dying on stage, it may be best to start by going to a stand-up school. (As someone who started doing it age 20 and suffering from terrible nerves, I think it would have made life a bit easier.) It might help you to be in the same boat as a bunch of newbies and at the same time to gain practice and confidence before going before a "real" audience. (Times may have changed, but once you get out onto the circuit, it's a fairly dog-eat-dog mentality and newbies don't get a lot of support from more seasoned performers.)

But little kids aren't talented no matter what their parents say.
