It's the whole year. Every year he kept a diary but this one was a bigger foolscap size version so a lot more information. There's also newspaper cuttings and as zooo says I can dig out some photos to go with it.
Why not have a series of documentaries and features on TV about the Second World War to mark this anniversary as there are so few programmes on the subject.
Perhaps Dan Snow could do something for the One Show or maybe Max Hastings or historian Andrew Roberts could provide some quotes and Daily Mail serialisations on this seldom covered period of history.
I might even write to Channel Five or some of the history channels to suggest showing some programmes about Hitler and Stalin for a change.
This anniversary also made me think how stoic people were in the Blitz compared to all these yobs around today, with their mobile phones and shoes.
You youngsters. I don't know. You do make me laugh.

So is there one for each year of the war?

Show some respect! Poor old Churchill was reduced to selling car insurance.

There is but the others are normal pocket sized ones. There is one he had on him when his boat got torpedoed and it got a bit wet.
It's no Anne Frank Chappers, but I found this diary rather interesting, you should see about getting it published.
I must admit I did chuckle abit at:
"Walked home from Auntie Nora's at 8 o'clock this morning. At 11.15am War was declared on Germany. Took Bess for a short walk in morning."
As you do.

My grandfather kept a journal for decades. He recorded just about everything, including the temperature and wind speed/direction. When I was a kid I liked to look up important historical dates (and events like my birth) to see what he'd written.
I haven't seen them in decades, so I assume my grandmother threw them out before she passed away. Too bad, because I would love to look at them again and see what he had to say about the war. (He was too old to serve, but he was an officer in the Michigan National Guard for decades.)

Started patrol at 8PM, end patrol 8AM no one stole Michigan.

The uniforms say "U.S. Army" on them and they're no different than Army soldiers when they're on duty. They're supposed to be used domestically by governors, but they can be (and often are) called up for combat duty overseas. My grandfather was 40 when the war broke out, so I think he just trained troops at the local base. I remember that he was called up for the Detroit riots in the sixties when he was in his sixties.
Cool old journals Chappers.
My grandfather was in the Dutch Calvary. They didn't stand much of a chance did they. I look at his army photo and he's on a horse with a sword but no gun. >_<
Many of my mom's family were in the Canadian military during WW2. Like my grandfather they didn't talk much about it if at all.

Aren't the Michingan National Guard supposed to keep us safe from Micheal Moore?
Quote: sootyj @ September 2 2009, 7:07 PM BSTAren't the Michingan National Guard supposed to keep us safe from Micheal Moore?
It proved costly to provide such protection via the military, so the governor has enacted a much cheaper measure: the state dumps truckloads of day-old donuts in front of Moore's house and the big tub o' lard just gorges himself all day and has no time for his usual shenanigans.
