I'll join the thread in almost 10 months, having been divided up and left to be trampled underfoot by Two Powers That Be a week before this thread was started.
It's sad how little I know about how other coutries were affected during the war...

A few excerpts from that week's diary. Everyday - quite mundane - life was going on too.
DIARY 1939
September 1 Friday
Germany invaded Poland at dawn this morning. (Poles are holding up advance).During the day most of our offices were closed owing to the International Situation. No general BBC programmes on radio today. There is a new bulletin nearly every hour.
Rained a bit in the morning, fine in the afternoon.
September 2 Saturday
Got to work and did not pack up until 1 o'clock. Went to library in the afternoon and did some shopping for Mum. After tea, Mum, Dad, Jack and myself went to Auntie Nora's, played cards and about 11 o'clock we had just left Auntie Nora's when we had a torrential downpour of rain (There was incessant lightning) so we went back to Auntie Nora's and slept the night there. Mum in bed and Dad, Jack and me in armchairs). Fine day till about 9 o'clock when there was a lot of lightning, thunder (Rain later) till about 2 am.
September 3 Sunday.
Quite a nice day.
Walked home from Auntie Nora's at 8 o'clock this morning. At 11.15am War was declared on Germany. Took Bess for a short walk in morning. Had a sleep in afternoon. At night had 3 games of crib (won 1), Gill had to work 8-5.
September 4 Monday
I did not have to go to work today so I helped Mum in morning. In afternoon sat in garden for a while and read library book. Heard records on wireless on and off all day.
War bulletin. Air raid (false) alarm at 3am. The British steamship "Athenia" (with 1,400 aboard) was torpedoed and shelled early this morning. RAF bombed German Fleet in Keil Canal early this morning.
Quite a nice day. (sun was very strong)

It's amazing that, as you say, life just carried on despite the world-changing events. You imagine that things would have changed overnight but the progression from these early days to full war/rations/conscription etc. are really interesting from an 'everyman' view.

I'm trying to write it all up. I started at 1 september but I've gone back to 31 December 1938. I seem to remember reading some of it before and even then there were threats by the IRA as well.
