Yea he even still had the box it came in from the Netherlands. I tracked the store on Google maps from his family house. That would have been a pretty far bicycle or horse ride. :)

I think the idea is much the same as a pawnbroker; they keep it for a certain 'grace period' in which you can get it back, and then melt it down after said period has expired.

Neither are terms you'd hear here. The latter I think most people would know from TV shows and movies, but I can honestly say I've never heard the former.
