It boggles the mind that women will make a concious decision not to let their children watch anything violent on television but will sit down with them every night to watch EastEnders - a show which regularly features violence, rape, incest, adultery and piss poor writing.
But I'm a bloke, so my opinion doesn't count when it comes to British television.
We don't watch soaps in our house. Or medical or (most) crime dramas. I don't really like sci-fi (watched the first series of Heroes, lost interest in the 2nd). I was going to watch The Wire but it was on too late. I don't like Desperate Housewives, Sex and the City, Ugly Betty, etc.
I sporadically watch Big Brother, because I'm interested in people and feel it's important to know what's going on.
Apart from comedy, I enjoy some British dramas, such as The Street (which isn't aimed at women), very few reality shows and a few 'educational' programmes, like Coast and most history-based shows.
My gripe is that a lot of TV shows are deriverative (how many similar cooking shows do we need?), have very little content (but repeat the same things over and over) and generally aimed at thick people.
