Quote: Renegade Carpark @ August 27 2009, 2:58 PM BSTThe real problem with British television is that very little of it is aimed at red blooded, straight men. Advertiseres concluded long ago that the Matriarch has the say in family spending power and is a major force in household television viewing habits, so the majority of programming is geared towards this market segment.
Interesting point. Taking a glance through the schedules, I can't really find anything to go against that argument.
Quote: Nil Putters @ August 27 2009, 3:18 PM BSTI enjoy Dr. Who, but can't stand cricket.
I wouldn't want a day of The Doctor though. I want something new, and preferably funny.
I couldn't stand to watch Doctor Who more than once. Tedious.
Quote: Dolly Dagger @ August 27 2009, 3:11 PM BSTPersonally I don't like most American shows.
Well why should you bother with Dexter, the Wire, Chuck, Battlestar Galactica, etc. when you can watch Big Brother, Coronation Street, Holby City or Who Do You Think You Are?
It boggles the mind that women will make a concious decision not to let their children watch anything violent on television but will sit down with them every night to watch EastEnders - a show which regularly features violence, rape, incest, adultery and piss poor writing.
But I'm a bloke, so my opinion doesn't count when it comes to British television.

What if it was Dr Who that you've never seen?

Spot on.
I'm sure men do that too! You numpty.
I grew up watching Multi-coloured Swap Shop on Saturday mornings in the 70s, now on BBC One it's 2 hours of cooking programmes. Either that's because it's dirt cheap to make, women are calling the shots, or the audience doesn't give a shit anymore. Probably all three, actually.

I still wouldn't want to watch it in the middle of the day.
I watch recent repeats of Dr Who quite often on Watch and stuff. There's enough of that.
I would quite like a little day long session of old Whos though.

Only those who have been indoctrinated to tolerate that kind of bland entertainment by their mothers and then their subsequent partners. A friend of mine watches 'Desperate Housewives' because his wife likes it and they like to share things together and because they are in love.
A lot of men also want a quiet life, so they will often put up with whatever television decision is made by the 'better half'. Despite giving in to their wives, these same blokes probably watch a lot of internet porn and meet other women in chat rooms, so it all balances out in the end.
It's the younger generation I feel sorry for, they never knew of a time when British television was really good.

Who's your favourite none-Tennant Who?
I guess the landscape has changed, you'd record it for later, which back then, we couldn't. And, of course, you have BBC Three repeating the new ones all the time, so it wouldn't be the same.
I just wish TV was more open to showing older shows & films, and varying things a bit, instead of guaranteed wallpaper.

Good Christ no. Bring on an all-channel Big Brother marathon.

I think you'll find that's called E4.
It's clear that women are out and about sitting in posh cafes talking about constipation, so they're probably not even in to watch all these programmes aimed at them.

And there we have it, the modern audience don't know any different: they'd happily watch shit all day.
