But still there's no incentive to make the journey. A couple of hours by train to London, or maybe an hour by car, by yourself/ves, at a tiny fraction of the cost, to your closest shopping destination.

London is a world-class city. Surely the museums, historic landmarks, entertainment and other unique features are worthy of an occasional 200-mile journey?

One would have thought so. But it's just not what most people are interested in - or at least not enough to sacrifice their beloved holiday in the sun for. You can get a return flight to Spain for a fraction of the price of travelling to London, no matter the method of transportation.

London is so great, we get visitors coming from thousands of miles away. (Usually clinging to the bottom of trucks).

The best way to visit London is to live there, I found. As soon as I moved 50 miles away, it became a bit too much effort to bother with.

In Oldham they used to have a big sign on one of the railway bridges proudly declaring

OLDHAM HOME OF THE TUBULAR BANDAGE

I don't know if it is still there.

:D

'tis indeed. :D It's quite the landmark. ;)

In fact, it's: "Setons welcomes you to Oldham, home of..." :)

LOL. You do know the two cities are only a 45-minute-drive apart don't you? Sorry, but that's got to be an exaggeration. I used to go to Manchester all the time, back in the '90s, for the clubs, and a certain specialist record shop called Fat City, in Oldham Street, and I didn't notice any difference in prices. I've got some great memories of the place, but I haven't been for a few years.

Actually, forget about the North/South rivalry, the Liverpool/Manchester rivalry is the real big one!

Do you mean Fat City records?

If so yeah that is a good shop, loads of bargains. As for the prices I think the days of it being much cheaper up North are long gone, it is probably cheaper than down south but it isn't cheap on the whole.

As a Manc you are programmed to hate Liverpool and vice versa which is funny really when you think about how similar we are.

I see Sebastian Orange News has been banned. Is it because he's Mancunian? Am I next on the hit-list?

Hurrah! That's great. But that is obviously the new version. Corporate sponsorship spoiling things.

Weirdly, the one and only time I've been to the Comedy Store in Manchester, one of the acts referenced it. That was the first and this is only the second time I've heard someone mention it. :)

It has a weirdly poetic ring to it and I think it's great. :D

Yeah, I wanted to drive to Edinburgh, but looked at the cost and the hassle of driving 6 hours if I was a good boy and didn't pee, it's just not worth it.
