I read the news today oh boy! Page 26

I'm interested in what you think of the release of al-Megrahi?

Is Scottish justice leading the way in humane treatment of criminals? Or are they being played by politicians.

Interesting to see that Madoff is dying of cancer too, I wonder if he'll be shown compassion by the US courts?

It may well have been the humane decision, and the guy was probably just a patsy for a bigger conspiracy behind the bombings, but it's been a disaster for Scotland and Scottish justice. They've been made to look right nanas, and should have shown more foresight before reaching the decision.

I think there's more going on here than appears on the surface. The US and the UK are desperate for more religiously moderate Arab states (which Libya even as an opressive dictatorship is). So it's in both of their interests for Libya to be able to save face and have a safe exchange of power from father to son.

Hence the return of Megrahi who to the Libyans is a war hero. Pretty f**ked up yes but less so than Libya turning into another militant failed state.

I have one! Just 'cause mine is not my own and is in a jar......

Is that where Gordon Brown has been all week?

I wouldn't mind if it was along the lines of Gadaffi's hot women bodyguards. :$

I can understand it being obvious by the amount of traffic being used. But isn't it easy enough to "hide" yourself on the 'net? I would imagine if you're a power user, you'd know how to do that already?

Yes, you can easily hide who you are.

Using a proxy server is the most common and easiest way to make you appear to be from somewhere else.

It's just going to be made harder in the future I think.

There was another article this week that got me thinking (always dangerous)... It was about a US soldier who apologised for killing 22 Vietnamese in the My Lai massacre where 500 civilians were killed - he only got 3 years house arrest!

So I guess I'm confused as to why the US are up in arms about al-Megrahi's release when Lt Calley had only served 3 years of his life sentence in his own house?

Or am I being naive?

I'm sure it's not the entire US up in arms. And remember, stories like this afford politicians and rent-a-gob pundits to be morally outraged. With politicians (I'm looking at you Obama) because it means he can detract attention from what a lousy fudged job he's making of healthcare, and pundits on TV channels because they do love their quivering outrage.

Politics is hypocracy and almost all countries forgive the soldiers actions carried out in the course of duty during war time. Cally was especially foul, but making him serve his sentence would have thrown open all the other war crimes commited by the US (that said the Vietcong were even worse).

I still think it was political. THey didn't want to get on an oil rich country with a dictator's bad side who has a history of punishing countries of annoyance by restricting oil.
