Windows 7

Something new comes out with Apple and this forum is usually bombarded with the usual PC zealots. With the upcoming launch of Windows 7 I thought I'd ask who's excited and who is not? I know when a new OS comes out for Mac I get excited but PC people seem to dread this sort of thing.

I've been reading about W7 and I'm pretty impressed so far and excited to try it out. I've played around a bit with it on a friend's downloaded Beta but that's about it.

According to Wired Magazine here are the Pros and here are the Cons

Discuss, I'd love to hear what avid windows users think of it, or anyone who might be running the Beta right now.

I love it.

Couldn't care less. Stick with XP until I have to change it.

It looks like my Linux OS.

I enjoy XP, but it's cack in comparison to the might of W7.

I just wish I had time to install the RTM. :(

RTM?

Release to manufacture. Final version. So people like Dell, Acer, etc, can have it pre-installed on their machines ready to start selling on the public release date.

Ah.

I didn't need Vista and I don't need this. The idea of giving Microsoft a stack of money so I can upgrade and do on my pc what I already do on it is just ridiculous.

I used Windows 98 for 10 years, which was not bad going. I'm not having a go at anyone who wants to upgrade, of course. :)

Whistling nnocently

I wouldn't be using it if I'd had to pay - as you say, XP works fine - but it is worth the money, IMO.

I made the jump straight from Mac to PC when all the PCs came with Vista preloaded, so I've never known what XP is like to use. Vista's shit though.

So this Windows 7 - how does it compare to Vista?

Light years ahead. I only have limited experience of Vista, but it's such a vast improvement. Very, very stable. Even on the first beta there were no compatibility problems. It's really a joy to use.

I have it on pre-order but I'll only be impressed if it's genuinely faster than Vista. Don't care about the rest of the features.

I'd say its faster and its more compatible with software and hardware. I've had to install drawing tablets on XP and Vista and it is ALWAYS a headache. Even when the stupid drawing tablet said right on the package "Made for Vista!" it still never really worked properly. Mac usually just needs the installation CD and a re-start, even without the CD installation it works with limited options; easy easy.
We installed the same tablet on my co-workers W7 laptop and it just picked it up and worked fine. It didn't even need the CD installation that it comes with.

It's lightning fast. :)
