District 9

Anyone seen this yet? I saw it last night and was completely blown-away. Like "V" was a commentary on the Nazi invasion (albeit a cheesey one), D9 addresses apartheid, the Johannesburg backdrop being perfect for the plot. This film is genuinely heartbreaking in sections...you won't believe how sympathetic you'll feel towards 7 foot insect aliens. A lot of it's shot in a sort of documentary style too and it really works, lending an air of gritty disturbing realism. One of the finest sci-fi flicks I've ever seen, and I've seen 'em all.

Plus it's got cool alien guns and explosions in it. Hooray!

Sorry Lee, sci-fi is bottom of my list when choosing films. Actioners with guns, explosions etc. is next bottom.

I hereby disqualify myself from worthwhile participation in this thread.

I've seen District 13. That's fun if you like free-running and the French.

I don't understand why anyone would dismiss a film because of its genre alone; a good film is a good film.

If somebody doesn't like a type of film it doesn't matter how good it is, they just won't enjoy it.

Which is odd. They're odd people. There are many types of film within most genres. All sci-fi isn't Star Wars style films, for example. But, yeah. Some people won't give things a chance.

It's generally women and people over 50 that won't watch sci-fi. My mother-in-law frustrates me so f**king much - she's here for a week and anything remotely "unrealistic" can't be viewed on the telly. Of course by "realistic" she means Coronation Street.

I saw it last week. I really enjoyed it but I wonder if it was partly because I was on holiday. Now I come to think of it, there were some niggling plot holes that bother me. And the relationship between the main alien and his son was a touch sentimental. That said, you're right in saying it was profoundly sad in places. And the 'splosions were phenomenal.

There were a couple of plot holes for sure. And some scenes had more than a passing resemblance to Cronenburg's The Fly, but all-in-all I thought it was a really solid, different, thought-provoking sci-fi tale.
