I'm generally not a person to throw sometihng away at the first sign of breaking but phones are a bit different, when they break it's generally a bit hard to get them working again, trust me I've tried.

Meh I can't be bothered.
I like fixing stuff and learning about technologies. If I can repair a somewhat decent phone for about £10, instead of shelling out £50+ for a new one. Then that makes me happy. Plus, I can spend £40 odd on phone calls. Not that I spend that much in a year. But, yeah.
