Internal mobile phone parts help!

I recently got given a phone to replace my really, old crappy one, with a slightly less, old crappy one. It's an LG Shine (or scratch magnet). Yeah, I'm not cool but :P

I had to replace the screen. £11.99 off eBay for a new LCD, not bad for an OK-ish "new" phone, what would cost £50+ new. ANYWAY!! The new screen didn't work, currently trying to resolve it with the eBay seller.

My point is, I snapped one of the cable ribbons, I'm not sure what it does, but the phone appears to be still working.

(It's the ribbon on the top left hand side)

I thought it was the camera, but through tests using the old broken screen (which still displays a corner) that appears to be working.

My fear is that it's the ear piece, even though the mp3/ringtone still works, dialing 4444 (O2) I didn't hear a dial tone, auto-dialing or operator.

Does anyone know how to reconnect these ribbons, it snapped not on the socket side, but what I'm guessing is the part soldered to the chip board.

Sorry the the bad explanation of it all.

Cheers!

Eep! Sometimes they're just push-in ones, or held in place with latch type connector. You'd have to take that metal piece off surrouding the lens.

Can't you just phone it from another phonoe to check if the earpiece is working?

It's f**ked.

There's a socket on one end and it looks like it was just soldered at the other (there is no connector or socket) that's where it has snapped.

I could :$ But I don't know the phones number and it won't except any of my other sim cards.

Optimistic!

If the phone part is knackered, I'd still quite happily use it as a basic mp3 player/camera. Saves me money for now.

Oh, then unless you're good at soldering fine pitch joints (no, not those ones) I'd have to agree with Gavin.

Save your self a couple of hours n just go get a new phone :)

*cries*

I did read on the 'net somewhere you can fix it down with some sort of tape. I don't quite understand how any connection was made between the ribbon and the board. Where it has snapped the edge of the board is slightly frayed, but I'm not sure if it connected internally or just on the bottom.

Am I right in thinking that a chip board is two pieces stuck together? :$

I've fixed lots of things and saved myself lots of money in the past, I ain't gonna stop now.

I have a laptop, which I thought would never come back to live. But I managed it. My friend was going to throw away a whole PC system and after a few hours of messing about, I bought it back to life Dr Frankenstein stylee.

I don't like to waste stuff. Not part of the throw-it-away attitude.

Chip board? A PCB!? The green board with the components on? No, it's multilayered and has copper tracks throughout.

It sounds as if it was soldered directed to the board and that it's been wrenched off somehow leaving part of it behind. Sorry Lee, I can't see that you can fix it without a very fine soldering iron. And maybe not even then.

Aren't there any local rag and bone men who could take it?

Yes, green board (PCB), sorry. I can't remember any of this stuff from school

Oh, well. It still works as MP3 and I needed a new one, so I'll just use it for that if worse comes to worse.

Cheers for help.

Nah, it still "works" for me.

Sorry, I work with this stuff all day and get a bit nerdy. :D

I didn't realise. Hmmm, handy man to have around.

:P *runs away to tea*

Just managed to find some new sim cards, inserted one and dialed 4444 (O2) and success! :D I can't imagine what connection I broke, but it doesn't seem to effect any of the phones features I'm interested in. :)

Need to get that screen replaced now. :)

Lee, get a new phone!

A screen replacement could be more than the phone is worth.
