No mention yet about it this week. I think I'm starting to come round to the KB sceptics thinking that it is a pile of plop.
The Kevin Bishop Show - Series 2 Page 8
Quote: Clockface @ August 15 2009, 2:28 AM BSTI think I'm starting to come round to the KB sceptics thinking that it is a pile of plop.
I gave it another chance, but gave up shortly after the start. It still didn't quite work for me; there is ample scope for humour in a sketch where Harry Hill presents the news, but it's pretty annoying to have Bishop announce who he's impersonating, and there wasn't actually any writing there to engage me. A Fistful of Coupons is a nice idea, but again, not capitalised on. No laughs for me to have negative equity as the frightening thing in Amityville Horror.
So what do the 'fans' find, that I'm missing?
Some really good stuff. Loved the David Mitchell sketch. Brilliant touch on the end with the little Peep Show jingle. News Burp was good, although its close could have probably been a bit more refined.
And I have a terrible memory so can't recall much else, but I do remember laughing quite a lot.
The psychic detective though, although it does still tickle me most weeks, is a bit tired now.

You're only saying that because he raped you.
The only decent things Bishop has done are 'Muppet's Treasure Island', Stupid Brian in 'My Family' and his appearance in Peep Show as a druggy raver.
What if David Mitchell was Peggy Mitchell's son? Hilarious, Kevin! What if Michael McIntyre replaced Donal McIntyre? Hilarious, Kevin! What if I did a did a pointless but homophobic sketch about Dale Winton? Hilarious, Kevin! Shawshank sounds vaguely like Wallwank? Hilarious, Kevin!
Quote: Mark @ August 10 2009, 1:38 PM BSTI disagree to a degree. He's deliberately doing the impressions OTT. But even despite this, his impressions of Gok Wan etc were pretty bang on though I thought?
Bishop clearly has a wide range of voices and acting styles - watching the parody of the drink-drive advert in the last episode (where he goes through a whole range of voices very quickly) demonstrates this. He'd make a mint if he ever decided to lose the cool and do Radio 4.
But, hey, if KB is not for you. Fair enough. We don't all like the same things.
It perplexes me when something like this comes along where I genuinely don't like it, for the most part shows don't stir anything in me, yet other people say that they really like it. I sat watching the first two episodes just astounded at the level of shitness the KB show managed to achieve, incessantly banging me on the head with it's hammer of shit over and over again. There just isn't anything to it, it has a formula that is so set in stone that it makes every 'joke' or scenario so obvious and there is absolutely nothing in the writing which amuses (me), partly it isn't helped by the speed of the show with no real scope to go anywhere other than setting the scene then moving on. I don't like running things down when I know other people are enjoying it on here so sorry to those few.
Sorry Kevin you're not funny.
KB's Harry Hill was diabolical. It was like a cross between Zippy and Papa Lazarou.
TITLE SEQUENCE OF KEVIN BISHOP SHOW.
FACE OF ANONYMOUS ACTOR.
ACTOR:
Hello and welcome to the Kevin Bishop show.
KEVIN BISHOP:
Cut!
ACTOR:
What was wrong with that?
KEVIN BISHOP:
Oh come on love, you didn't mention my name.
ACTOR:
Yes I did! I said welcome to the Kevin Bishop show.
KEVIN BISHOP:
Yeah, right, but that's the name of the show. You've still got to say the name of the guy you're impersonating, which in this case is me, or no-one will know who it's supposed to be.
ACTOR:
Oh come on, it's obvious! I'm even dressed as a bishop!
CAMERA PULLS BACK TO SHOW ACTOR DRESSED AS A BISHOP
KEVIN BISHOP:
Well that doesn't count, that's the gag.
ACTOR:
And I'm on a giant chessboard on the bishop's square!
CAMERA PULLS BACK TO SHOW THIS TO BE THE CASE
KEVIN BISHOP:
Still part of the same gag. You know the rules, first say who you're doing, then do one gag and one gag only per sketch.
ACTOR:
I still say you should play the part.
KEVIN BISHOP:
Don't be stupid, how could I do it?
I look just like Kevin Bishop!
Quote: Tim Walker @ August 15 2009, 11:38 PM BSTWhat if Michael McIntyre replaced Donal McIntyre?
Do you know, I didn't realise that's what that sketch was?
I did wonder why his impression of Donal was so weird!
>_<
Quote: zooo @ August 16 2009, 11:51 PM BSTI did wonder why his impression of Donal was so weird!
Oops. His Harry Hill was a bit poor, I'd agree with the view above on that. His Michael McIntyre was average... but his David Mitchell was pretty good I thought! The Russell Brand sketch made me laugh more than I should too... not sure why, as it wasn't a new idea.
The ridiculous mocking the ridiculous in a ridiculous manner is an almost guaranteed success.
series 1 was awful
series 2 is alot better
I remember the pilot for this was really good, but the sheer quantity of sketches they have to do has made it more diluted IMO. A lot of the ideas seem under developed. The McIntyre one for example (and I'm not saying that because I did the same setup for Newsjack) was not a great impression and didn't really have a point. The same about Harry Hill. There is so much more they could do.
The Mind Cop is just a template now. It did amuse me for longer than it should but there is nothing new to it.
There is genuine talent amongst the people working on the show but I think they are over stretched as it currently stands.
Saw this for the first time yesterday and found it pretty funny. Fast-paced and good impressions, enough to have a good chuckle and the ones I didn't like didn't go on for too long. Can't remember many now. Didn't really get the Shawshank/Wallwank Redemption, there was a Pete Doherty reference so expected to see drugs or something in the wall, but the payoff seemed to just be a weak pun.
On the whole though, some silly fun, might well tune in again.
