David Mitchell - too much of a good thing? Page 4

I like David. What makes him enjoyable is that he's generally witty, thinking up new jokes and banter on the spot. As long as he's doing that and to such a high standard I'm happy to see him on TV. I still love the comments he made on Mock the Week about 'why don't the stock market bankers just type it back in? No actual physical money has moved' Laughing out loud

As for Russel Howard- I don't hate him but like alot of the Mock the Week crowd I have started noticing alot of his setup is always the same ("Wouldn't that be hilarious?"). Problem for him is, other shows like Would I Lie To You? won't induldge him like MtW always will.

Too much of David Mitchell is not possible. The man never fails to make me laugh more than anyone else.

Just saw Richard Hammond presenting a kids TV show looking distinctly pained. So a presenter can be far more ubiquitous and sell out more, Mitchell's never really done anything that undignified.

What is it celebs are seeking, when they take on such work? Presumably Hammond doesn't need the money, since he seems to work plenty hard elsewhere, so is he an uncontrollable attention-seeker? Or just a workaholic?

Also, I've taken to wondering about comedians in ads. Part of the appeal of Stephen Fry is that he presents himself as having a certain taste, a disdain for the inane, an outspokenness against mediocrity. For example, on QI he lambastes The Da Vinci Code from his high horse. So why does he do ads? Sure, the cash must be nice, but he's devaluing his appeal whenever he does them IMO. I'm sure most of us can remember Carol Vorderman doing ads for debt consolidation, and look at her now.

Hammond's nowhere near as common a fixture on TV as Mitchell!

Well he is on quite a bit.

Mitchell is pretty dull talking about himself, but I think he's funnier and more urbane than Fry. He's like garlic he adds something to every dish.

Except unlike garlic, David Mitchell is not a rancid abomination upon the face of the Earth!
