Galloway?

His expenses are published on line, they're really quite modest. And all that shit about him taking bribes was unproven, he actually travelled to America to clear his name (risking arrest).

He's a shit but an incorrupt shit.

Yes I trust greed, only the most dangerous fanatical politicians are honest.

You've proved your initial point, I feel. :)

Perhaps, but paying more money does necessarily result in getting more conscientious and competent people.

This argument really comes back to the discredited economic idea that no-one ever does anything for any reason other than personal gain.

I dunno I was actually up for a couple of higher level public management jobs and I walked away, way too much work and responsibility.

Yes, that was amusing - he gave the Americans a good pasting.

However!!!! Smoke - Fire - Saddam.

Whereas the egotistical shits who take them just do them badly. Paying more money does not persuade better people to take these jobs, it just attracts greedier arseholes.

EDIT: I should add I work in the public sector and that our Board, most of whom were recruited from private industry on shocking salaries, are the most clueless self-promoting bunch of incompetents imaginable, much worse than the old civil service hacks we used to get.

But the rationale is that only the best educated, best qualified greedy arsehole gets the job.

Oh, hardly. Theoretically that could have happened, but the diplomatic shit tornado it would have unleashed meant he never would be.

It made good telly though.

I think he's genuinely a commited communist and he wouldn't have taken a handout. He maybe vane and naieve but not all politcians are crooks.

of course they aren't. Just the ones who cozy up to crack pot dictators.

At the time America was going 9/11 paranoia mad so it may have been unlikely but not impossible. More to the point he could have been kicked out of office if the evidence had stuck.

Either way he was courageous and it was a proud day for British democracy. One shouldn't by cynical all the time.

Laughing out loud

I seem to recall it was a cough medicine in my youth. Either that or we're talking about George, the apologist for genocidal Saddam Hussein, and Celebrity Big Brother cat.

I love this oft repeated nugget of crap about that Galloway clip. Everybody else would have called him a c**t and pissed in his eyes, of course. Heard of the expression, 'When in Rome?'.

And in his day Saddam was something of the toast of the west, being the only middle eastern leader to introduce a british-style jury system to the country's non-sharia law courts and university education for women. He even won a unesco award.

And he paid his gas bill.
