Alan Duncan MP Page 3

Quote: sootyj @ August 13 2009, 8:59 PM BST

What were his actual mistakes? Was he fiddling expenses?

His mistakes were talking like a naive fool on camera, about a subject the vast majorty of the public feel strongly about.

In a high profile position you can't do it.

I did say earlier that he may actually have a point, but the people that his party are trying to appeal to won't see it like that.

EDIT ALSO

In March 2007, Mr Duncan claimed £598 to overhaul a ride-on lawn-mower and then a further £41 to fix a puncture a month later.

Also the fees office actually stopped a claim for gardening because they said it was too much.

I think I'm right in saying that Churchill wasn't elected in 1940. Didn't Chamberlain resign?

Yes

This what I am saying.

When there was an election in 1945 he lost!

1. Duncan isn't going to get that chance because of mistakes like this. The media will nail him to the cross.

I think that this would happen with pretty much any politician now. I'm certain it would have with Churchill. The media today is a VERY different animal to what it was in the 1930s and 1940s.

Quote: bigfella @ August 13 2009, 8:57 PM BST

2. Please also note that in order to do anything you have to get elected and Alan Duncan would not get a party elected.

I'm really not sure about that. No one thought that a woman could ever lead a party to electoral victory. And yet she did. Not once, but 3 (and a half) times.

Quote: bigfella @ August 13 2009, 8:57 PM BST

3. Remember Churchill got kicked out when the British Public actually got a say on the matter.

And then got back in after the country was reminded how awful the Labour party were. ;)

What is obvious is that he shows bad judgement.

A claim for £600 for a ride on lawn mower?? The Torys are trying (succesfully I think) who would struggle to pay that for a car!

This episode simply shows that.

What mistakes would he ( and will he in his present position) make in any general election campain?

Eh?

I dunno. But politicians can clean themselves up. Boris, as far as his 'bumbling' personality goes, has cleaned up a hell of a lot since the Mayoral bid campaign began.

Quote: Aaron @ August 13 2009, 9:22 PM BST

Eh?

Indeed.

They are trying to appeal to people who would struggle to pay that for a car. :$

But is it too late for that? Has the dye been cast?

Ohh. Right, yeah.

Well, I'm included in that!

To be honest though, the way things are looking right now I think it'd be hard for them to lose. I just wish that some of them didn't seem to be so complacent about that.

Agreed!

Die bigfella, die!

>_< That came out wrong, sorry.

Pocket change I don't care unless he broke the law trying to cover it up.

And as for being an idiot on camera, only soul less political robots are always on message. Churchill would have looked a right arse if he'd been recorded when ever he was pissed or on cocaine.

Quote: bigfella @ August 13 2009, 9:26 PM BST

No, I don't think he's even nearly at that point. He's not one of the most high-profile members, despite having been on HIGNFY, and despite the fuss today, what he's said isn't actually that big a deal. Give it a week or two and it'll be forgotten about. Even Simon Hughes, who was revealed as being in more or less a bisexual Profumo situation, still has a pretty good reputation.

Quote: Griff @ August 13 2009, 9:30 PM BST

I want to know what they're doing about declaring war on Horne and Corden.

Appologies.

And I am sick of hearing about how the elected leadership of this country should live like some moronic unemployed plonker from Didcott.

Other countries MPs laugh at ours for how little they get away with.

Aaron even the Daily Mail writes about how fab Labour was in the 1940s.

NHS, nuclear power, atomic bombs, dignified exit from Empire.

UK! UK! UK!

Quote: Griff @ August 13 2009, 9:35 PM BST

True. To be properly remembered you have to be like Mark Oaten WHO ENJOYED HAVING RENT BOYS SHIT ON HIM. See, none of you have forgotten that.

As opposed to Ming Campbell who was shit on by his own party. Come to think of it every one shits on the Liberals, Oaten merely paid for it.

Quote: Griff @ August 13 2009, 9:30 PM BST

I wish these arsehole journalists would shut the f**k up about expenses now. It's a miserable witch hunt. I don't give a shit how much MPs spend on their garden, I want to know what they're doing about ID cards and foreign wars

Totally, TOTALLY agree. It's such a lazy, sure-hit, pathetic story now. *sigh*

I, for one, will never forget squatting over that man. What a day to get acute diarrhea... :$

Laughing out loud

Quote: Griff @ August 13 2009, 9:37 PM BST

Agreed. Shock horror, people running the country make more money than the rest of us. Whoopee doo.

Quite. And on a similar note, all of the bitching about those "old Etonian boys" getting back into power. Now, excuse me, but I'd rather have an educated PM who went to Oxbridge via Eton or Harrow than someone with four O Levels from a comprehensive in Coventry (for example).

Normally you'd take the stand opposing the Daily Mail. :P

Exit from Empire, you're not going to get me on side with that argument!
