Both he and Rose came from families where incest was common and accepted.
Baby P's killers Page 8
There must be SOME people who do this stuff and come from perfectly nice homes?
Or maybe not...
Is no one born evil anymore? Tut.
Bloody nurture versus nature.
I think what it's difficult for anyone to grasp is the thought process behind the mother. For instance she's already been quoted as sayibg she's planning a nice holiday after she serves the sentence. I mean don't equate having a baby with maternal instinct because your trying to put her on the same plain as you or me. That kid was no more than a means to live i.e. the social benefit. Not a human, not even a pet. Something to provide money.
The problem comes of course when you have to look after 'it'. Then 'it' becomes an inconvenience. And the probability is if Baby P had survived, he may well have gone down the same path himself, because abuse to him would have been the norm, not the exception.
When you think about it, in a country as old as ours, there are probably some abusers who are descended from a long line of abusers, going back hundreds of years.
It would appear the ability to love and empathise is a learned behaviour.

I dunno about that.
That doesn't fit in with my romanticised view of life.

Well sadly it's certainly nothing new.

Absolutely.

Yep and it's built into babies to want that even over food (according to scientific research) - which IMO proves how important it is.
That's why I'm concerned about these child-rearing 'experts' who tell mothers to feed to routines and leave babies crying.
Just a thought to kick around. I think that our society as it currently stands can't handle the current levels of social deprivation. It just can't get to the root of the problem.
Poverty and a lack of education were always considered to be the underlining cause of societies problems. Well education is free and every child has a chance to participate in it and the welfare system is there to make sure no-one starves.
Yet year after year where I work we get an increasing number of pupils who are well behind their chronological age in social and academic skills. Kids are turning up in the nursery that can only grunt. They have zero language skills. and numeracy skills? They haven't a clue.
So we are literally throwing education and money at these people and it's being batted back in our faces. So what next?
As I keep saying it all begins before school age. Young children require a lot of interaction with at least one, consistent, caring adult. Many children, for one reason or another, don't get that.

But many children won't get that from their parent/s. So what do we do? I have my own answer but it infringes so many human rights it just wouldn't be done.
Edit. So has the welfare state run it's course?

I have absolutely no idea. If some people know the dangers of smoking and drinking during pregnancy and still do it, I don't know how education could help. If more people had extended family around them that would help too.

I'll throw one out. I had it you had it and I guess my kids will have it as well. Sex before marriage. It used to be frowned upon. Now accepted. What it nearly always meant was that people used to have to save up years to get married. Then when they were they were older. Therefore when the kids were born the parents were that much older as well.
But that also led to backstreet abortion clinics. But you can't have your cake and eat it.
Tough isn't it.
